From the Pastor
Dear John Letter
A GI overseas got a "Dear John" letter in which the girl not only told him she was going to marry someone else, but she asked him to return her picture.
His buddies got his permission to avenge his broken heart and shattered ego. Rounding up pictures of more than thirty pretty girls, they sent them to his flirting friend with a note which read, "Please pick out your picture and return the rest I can't remember which one you are."(Copied)

Ever had your heart broken? Jesus mends the broken hearted. Disappointment and failure are all under His control. He may allow you to be broken, so He can put it all back together. You may have a friend who has been "broken." Sometimes we are broken by our own sins/ sinfulness. Sometimes we are broken by situations that are beyond our control. Sometimes things just "don't work out." Our best efforts, prayers and determination, sometimes don't work.
Regardless, Jesus remains the same... He still heals the broken hearted. Ready to try again? Ready to try again, with His help? You have a lot of life to live. Jesus will help.
Praying for You!
Bro Jerry

Sunday School Getting A New Name
Starting August 1, 2014 the name of our Sunday School organization will be changed from "Sunday School" to "Bible Study." We have found through research and experience that many adults respond better to the term "Bible study" than to the term "Sunday school." For the unchurched and lost the term Sunday school conveys the idea of children's classes and simple Bible stories. The dictionary even defines Sunday school as "A class held on Sundays to teach children about their religion." Although this is true it is only partly true in that this definition does not reflect youth and adult classes. Sunday school at Woodmont Baptist Church is defined as:
The foundational strategy in a local church for leading people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and for building on-mission Christians through open Bible study groups that engage people in evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, and worship.
We desire Sunday school to reach the lost and unchurched and to be a starting place to learn about the Bible and the Lord Jesus Christ. The term Sunday school, in today's culture, just does not communicate all that we want it to.
The new name Sunday Morning "Bible Study" is also in line with our emphasis on Biblical teaching during the Bible study hour. Many churches are changing the name of this Bible teaching organization to better reflect its purpose and focus to the community. The following is a list of local and regional churches that have changed their Sunday morning Bible studies to other names.
Examples include:
- Highland Baptist, Florence, Al Bible Study /Small Groups
- Grace Life, Hunter Street Baptist in B'ham Small Groups
- Highland Park Baptist Community Groups
- FBC Madison, FBC Gadsden, FBC Nashville Bible Study
- FBC Huntsville, Mountain Brook Baptist Sunday Morning Bible Study
- FBC Montgomery Bible Fellowship Classes
- FBC Gardendale Bible Fellowship
Be watching for more information on Bible Study at Woodmont Baptist Church as we prepare to launch our new "Bible Study" year in August.
Note: It will probably take at least 10 years before we stop calling it "Sunday school," but it's a change worth making.

Hess's Headlines
Dear Church,
Thank you! This June marks 8 years since I started serving on staff at Woodmont Baptist Church. I cannot begin to thank you enough for your kindness and patience during these eight years. I hope each of you remember that Woodmont started ministering to me long before I started ministering to the church. It was the summer before my 8th grade year at Feds Creek Middle School when I first met folks from Woodmont Baptist. For the next four to five summers Woodmont coming to Kentucky was a highlight for my family and me. In fact, it was such a highlight that I decided to come to Florence and go to UNA. My goal was to get a teaching degree and go back to Kentucky and coach football. However, the Lord had other plans.
I had been running from the call to ministry for a long time. After all, I had witnessed the worse situations in the church since my father was a pastor. I was determined never to work in a church. However, the Lord had other plans. Greg Hammond, a hero of mine, recruited me to help with a youth Bible study called Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby. Then, I was recruited as a Sunday school teacher in our youth department. However, these weren't my first jobs at Woodmont.
I was first recruited for an Easter musical. I thought to myself, "This is it! I'm finally going to get my big debut!" After Kevin asked me about being in the musical, my mind raced about options of what my role would be; an elegant angel, or maybe a super-muscular Roman soldier, or maybe a brave disciple walking on water, or maybe a soloist. However, the Lord had other plans...I was going to play the part of the demon-possessed man.
I'm thankful the Lord has had different plans for me all along the way. When I first started in youth ministry I was like King Solomon in 1 Kings 3:7, "But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties." The past eight years have been wonderful, challenging, nerve-racking, encouraging, interesting and exciting. I cannot thank you enough Woodmont. As your student minister you have ministered to me more than I could ever return. You were there for me through seminary, through my father's tragic death, through all of my mistakes and failures, through some good sermons and bad sermons I have preached, and through all the times that I have had no clue what I am doing! I am also appreciative of how you have been there for Janna as well!
We love you and appreciate you!

Children's Ministry
A couple of years ago when I was diagnosed with cancer. I am not going to lie I was scared and mad at the Lord. How could He let this happen to me during my favorite and busiest time of the year, summer, really! Who is going to take care of my babies at camp, Bible school and Wednesday nights? So guess what, it got done. It was not about me, it was about Him. Well I learned to fight for my life like I have never done before. You learn a lot about yourself when times get tough. I learned about joy during my chemo, and learned there is a difference between happiness and joy.
Happiness is in the moments: like a beautiful sunrise, blue skies, shopping or playing with your grandson. I told the ladies at Bunco "it is easy to be happy when everything around you is going right." All of them get out of their seats and did the happy dance with Pharrell Williams. (If you don't know him Google him.) But, to have a true joy only comes from knowing Jesus. We can learn a lot about joy from the book of Philippians and Paul. Paul had joy even though he was chained to a prison guard. Now if Paul can be content in that, then why can't we. So when we are faced with cancer, death, or divorce we can have the assurance of Jesus and joy in His word.
Wouldn't it be great if when we meet people on the street, or even on Sunday morning greeting time, knowing that everybody has got something going on with them that we can share "JOY" with each other. I like what Regina Brett said "God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do." My prayer is that we all will learn how to have true joy, and the next time something happens you are prepared. I leave you with this one verse, Philippians 4:11 "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."
Joy in Jesus

55 and Older Join Us For These Upcoming Events...
We will not meet for our Monthly Luncheon in June. Many of our members help in VBS and it is in June this year so felt it would be better to cancel. Look for information in the Bulletin concerning the July Luncheon.
Game Day is not scheduled for June/July/August due to different vacation schedules and family visits. Enjoy the summer!

We had a great "Singing Down by the River" even though it took place at the East Campus due the cold weather moving in. You missed a great evening.
Our Mystery Trip to Savannah TN to visit a Museum, Cherry Mansion, Lunch at Pickwick State Park and Shiloh was fun and educational. We invite you to join the Primetimer's and participate in the upcoming activities.
