Three DISD students attend Lone Star Leadership Academy

Three Dickinson ISD students earned the opportunity to represent the district at the Education in Action's summer 2016 Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. Kirra Gonzales from Calder Road Elementary, Jacob Zamarripa from Barber Middle School and Terrisa White from McAdams Junior High all participated in the camp this past summer.

They were among 1,144 outstanding students in grades 4-8 who were selected based on demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, educator recommendation and involvement in school/community activities.

During the weeklong, overnight camps, these distinguished students developed leadership skills while learning about the great state of Texas. Participants experienced what they are learning in school through visits to notable and historically significant Texas sites. The Lone Star Leadership Academy experience provides a unique opportunity for outstanding students to learn about Texas leaders and what it means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity, and practice presentation skills in Leadership Groups.

In addition, participants have fun meeting other outstanding students and making new friends while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills, and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.

Dickinson Rotary names four DHS educators as Paul Harris Fellows

Paul Harris Fellows
The Rotary Club of Dickinson recently honored four educators from Dickinson High School with the organization's Paul Harris Fellow award. Pictured at the presentation are Rotary member Vicki Mims; honorees Dr. Billye Smith, Trevor Braselton, Veronique Angel and John Snelson; and Rotary members Ann Bragg and Carla Voelkel.
Four educators with 24 years of combined service to Dickinson High School were honored by the Rotary Club of Dickinson with the organization's Paul Harris Fellow award. The award is normally given to Rotary Club members but this year the club decided to look outside its membership and award four educators for their contributions to youth in Dickinson.

Rotary Club members contribute each year to the Rotary Foundation, which provides funds for service projects across the world. For every $1,000 annual donation, an individual Rotary Club can honor one person with a Paul Harris Fellow. The award, which is named for the founder of the Rotary organization, honors those who display leadership in their career and service to the community.

The first recipient is Dr. Billye Smith, Dickinson High School principal for the past four years. Rotary member Vicki Mims introduced Smith saying that academic achievement has increased each year and the success of fine arts, athletics and co-curricular programs is at an unparalleled high.

"When we had an opening for high school principal here in Dickinson, we began looking for someone who could transform DHS into a campus with high expectations for the success of each and every student in academics, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. And, no matter whom we talked to, one name kept coming to the forefront - and that was Billye Smith," said Mims.

The second honoree is Dickinson ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach John Snelson. Entering his fifth football season at DHS, Snelson led the Gators to the playoffs three of the past four years, including Regional Finalist honors the past two years.

Rotary member Corey Magliolo said, "What better way to tell you what kind of man he is, than with his own words: 'My job is to build and maintain a quality program that this community can be proud of and that provides our student athletes with every opportunity for success - both in the classroom and on the field of competition.'" Magliolo added, "I believe he has accomplished this in just four short years. You see it on Friday nights in the eyes of his players and coaches."

The third recipient, Veronique Angel, has taught French at DHS for 10 years and took on the responsibility as the Dickinson Rotary Club's Interact Club sponsor about five years ago.

"She has achieved the perfect balance between nurturing and keeping hands off and letting the students lead, but she also makes sure they conduct business according to Rotary International Interact by-laws," said Rotary member Carla Voelkel.

The final honoree is Trevor Braselton, who has served as DHS Head Band Director for six years and is a DHS graduate and former member of the Gator Band. Rotary member Ann Bragg introduced him saying, "His bands have earned UIL Sweepstakes and qualified for the UIL State Marching Contest."

All four honorees are outstanding educators who truly put service to others before themselves. They are shining examples for the youth in DISD, and they exemplify the meaning of Paul Harris Fellow.
