Dickinson ISD kicks off new school year Wednesday
|
The first week of school is here and Dickinson ISD is set to kick off the 2016-2017 school year with students returning on Wednesday. To help get the school year off to a great start, there are several newsworthy items to pass along to parents, students and the community.
The Texas Legislature passed House Bill 2610 which requires schools to provide 75,600 minutes of instruction per year instead of a certain number of days. Because of this change, Dickinson ISD was able to develop a school calendar which allows for the first week of school to start mid-week and for teachers, parents and students to ease back into the routine of the school year with a shorter first week.
The school days had to be slightly extended to make this work, so new school hours will be implemented. Dickinson ISD elementary campuses, including pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, will attend school 15 minutes longer with new times of 8:20 a.m.-3:35 p.m. New hours for secondary students, grades 5-12, are 7:20 a.m.-2:35 p.m., which is only five minutes longer than last year.
Thousands of Dickinson ISD students will get a glimpse at the new school year tonight when several campuses are hosting a Meet the Teacher Night. This is a time for students to drop off school supplies and meet their teacher so they are ready to go on the first day of school on Wednesday. Campuses participating in the Meet the Teacher Night include
- Bay Colony Elementary, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
- Calder Road Elementary, 5-6:30 p.m.
- Hughes Road Elementary, 5:30-7 p.m.
- K.E. Little Elementary, 6-7 p.m.
- San Leon Elementary, 6-7 p.m.
- Lobit Elementary, 6-7 p.m.
- Lobit Middle School, 6-7 p.m.
- Dunbar Middle School, 6-7 p.m.
Approximately 700 Dickinson ISD students starting school this week will have the supplies they need to help them be successful thanks to the M.I. Lewis School Service Center School Supply Distribution. Each year, M.I. Lewis purchases school supplies and with the help of volunteers sorts them into backpacks donated by Lighthouse Christian Ministries. The supplies are waiting on the students at the schools when the year begins. This annual distribution of school supplies has been helping families in need for several decades and has grown over the years.
The new school year also marks the grand opening of the Lobit Education Village, featuring Louis G. Lobit Elementary and Elva C. Lobit Middle School. The district is excited to explore the opportunities available to our teachers and students in this new school design.
The Barber Middle School STEM Academy will be available to 100 fifth grade students from across the district that were chosen this past spring through an application process. This new academy will engage students in innovative science, technology, engineering and math instruction through their core subject areas. The district plans to expand the program to sixth grade in 2017-2018 and is working to design the new junior high approved by voters this past May with more STEM-related opportunities for seventh and eighth grade students.
