San Leon running program incorporates life lessons
The end result was participating in a 5K run, but along the way eight girls at San Leon Elementary learned some important lessons that will impact them throughout their lives.
The Girls on the Run program was started at San Leon Elementary this school year by Counselor Martha White and teacher Kelli Love. The two learned about the program and attended training earlier this school year.
"The girls learned a lot about self-awareness, celebrating and sharing their strengths and creating meaningful relationships with adults at their school," said White. "The girls are fueling their bodies to be healthy, not just physically, but also mentally healthy."
The eight girls chosen were leaders among their classmates and were recommended through teacher referrals. They included Jacinda Coleman, Sinclair Coleman, Addison Stanley, Analysa Garcia, Hailey Parker, Hailey Jackson, Jazmin Vazquez and Karolyn McDaniel. The girls met with White and Love twice a week for a little over an hour after school for a total of 24 days. They completed different exercises and games each week with a different theme, including emotions, nutrition, attitude, inner beauty, friendship and more. Running and exercise were integrated in all the sessions as a healthy outlet.
The girls also participated in a service project together called "Pennies for Paws" where they raised money to benefit a local animal shelter. The year came to a close May 21 when White, Love and the girls participated in a 5K run at the University of Houston with 3,000 spectators cheering them and other girls on to the finish line.
White said the program was been a big success at San Leon and other girls are asking how to join. Plans are already being made to expand it next school year to more third and fourth grade girls at San Leon, and White has shared the program with other Dickinson ISD counselors to consider for their campuses.
Girls on the Run is a national program open to girls ages 8-13 with 972 girls participating in the Greater Houston area and 247 coaches. It is sponsored by Athleta, Fox Sports, Cigna, Smartwool, Houston Marathon Foundation, Bounce to a Healthy You, Amerigroup Real Solutions, Maximus, Academy, Lamar Education Awards Foundation and Baylor College of Medicine Community Programs.
