Father figures making a difference through WATCH D.O.G.S. program at Hughes Road
Hughes Road Elementary father Jimmy Riojas helps three kindergarten students, Madison Brady, Trinity Smith and Jayleen Ferman with an assignment. He is a volunteer with the school's WATCH D.O.G.S. program.

Walk through Hughes Road Elementary on any given day and you will see volunteers working with students, helping in the cafeteria or supervising in the gym; however, the real impact they are having is far greater than extra help around the campus. Started just last month, the WATCH D.O.G.S. program is giving fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other male role models a special way to be involved at the school.
WATCH D.O.G.S. stands for Dads of Great Students and is offered through the National Center for Fathering. Hughes Road Counselor Toni Davis heard about the program at a Counselor's Conference and brought the program to Hughes Road with funding from the school's Parent Teacher Organization.
"Our students' benefit from having more male figures in their lives, plus it gives the fathers a chance to see what is happening at the schools. The kids are getting to see these men get involved in their elementary school, smiling, waving and greeting them throughout the day," said Davis.
Davis kicked off the program in mid-April with nearly 300 attending a "Dads and Kids' Pizza Night Event." Since then, the program has taken off and 17 different dads have already volunteered at least one day and more are scheduled for the remainder of the school year.
"It gives me a chance to give back to the community by helping provide a safe place for our students to come to school," said Jimmy Riojas, who has a daughter in kindergarten at Hughes Road. "I love seeing the kids enjoy themselves."
Grandfather John Slatter has become a regular with the WATCH D.O.G.S. program and has already volunteered several times. Slatter's grandchildren, Marley and Halle Harris, asked him to volunteer and he couldn't say no. The retired Marine and police chief said he was looking for a hobby and this program keeps him active. Volunteering also gives him a chance to watch his grandchildren grow up, which is something he missed when his own children were young and he was away serving in the Marines.
"My favorite part is helping in the gym. I love being around the kids and getting lots of high 5's from the students," said Slatter.
Before joining the program, the WATCH D.O.G.S. attend an orientation with Davis and receive a t-shirt and name badge to wear while at the school. From there, they work with Davis to determine the areas in the school they would like to volunteer, which could include assisting in the gym, working with teachers in a classroom, patrolling the hallways, helping with arrival and dismissal periods or assisting with student supervision in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch. The volunteers are then free to sign up for days in the WATCH D.O.G.S. calendar.
"We are excited about the interest we have had in our WATCH D.O.G.S. program and growing the program even more next school year as our dads and other father figures get more involved in the exciting things taking place at Hughes Road," said Davis.

Twelve DHS choir students advancing to Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition
Twelve members of the Dickinson High School Choir received "Superior" ratings, the highest honor given at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest earlier this semester. This earns them the opportunity to advance to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition at the University of Texas in Austin later this month.
Choir students earning a "Superior" rating include: Destiny Caldwell, Aubrey Gentle, Sydnee Horton, Stefania Mejia, Isis Robbs, Valentina Rubio, Isabel Sipocz, Adam Funderburg, James Llanos, Jordan Matkin and Colton Powers.
The Dickinson High School Choirs also competed in UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Competition. For the first time, the DHS Choir program took three choirs to the contest. All choirs performed with their best efforts and represented Dickinson ISD very well. For the first time in a very long time, both the Symphonic and Chamber Choirs received a "Superior" rating for their Sight-Reading portion of the competition and received "Excellent" ratings for their concert portion. The choirs are directed by Nicole Castille and Jaclyn Glasscock.
