Special Election Edition - May 7, 2016

2016 Bond Referendum
Voters approve $70 million bond referendum with 75 percent in favor

Dickinson Independent School District voters approved a $70 million bond referendum today with 75.04 percent for and 24.96 percent against. A total of 1,350 votes were cast in the election with 1,013 for the bond and 337 against.

"It is a great day for the students and employees of Dickinson ISD," said Superintendent Vicki Mims. "The voters once again came through for our children. We are extremely grateful for this support to help us meet the needs of our growing school district."

The bond project, which was crafted by the district's Citizen's Facility Task Force, includes construction of a new junior high school to serve students in grades 7-8. Dickinson ISD currently has one campus, McAdams Junior High, which all Dickinson ISD students in grades 7-8 attend. As the district's student enrollment has continued to increase, enrollment at McAdams has grown to more than 1,550 students, including more than 100 additional students just in the past year.

Dickinson ISD has seen a growth of 4,000 students over the past decade, increasing from 7,000 to just short of 11,000 students this school year. This number is expected to continue to rise as more housing developments are underway on the west side of the district and in the Lago Mar subdivision starting near Tanger Outlet Mall.

The new junior high will be located on the east side of the Dickinson ISD boundaries on land the district already owns on FM 3436, which is also known as Strom Road. This will allow for one junior high on both sides of the school district. The district is planning for an August 2018 opening of the new campus.

"We would like to send a special thank you to our Dickinson ISD Citizen's Facility Task Force for all their hard work over the past year and their dedication to the students of our school district," said Mims.

Magliolo, Rodriguez and Swartz elected to Board of Trustees

Dickinson ISD will be welcoming three new residents to serve on the Board of Trustees.

Jessica Rodriguez won the election today to represent Single Member District 6. She earned 61.15 percent of the vote to challenger Chad Rankin's 38.85 percent. A total of 260 votes were cast with 159 for Rodriguez and 101 for Rankin. Rodriguez is a stay-at-home mother with children attending Dickinson ISD schools.

Benefits Consultant Corey Magliolo was the only person to file for the election in Single Member District 5, while retired resident David Swartz was the sole filer in Single Member District 7.

The three new members are replacing long-time Dickinson ISD board members - Patty Halter in Single Member District 5, J.T. Floyd in District 6 and Linda Butler in District 7. Halter and Butler are retiring after 15 years on the Board, while Floyd has served for 10 years.

The three new members will be sworn in at the next Dickinson ISD Board of Trustees meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 16.
