Special Edition - 2016 Bond Referendum

2016 Bond Referendum
No tax rate increase needed
New junior high proposed
on May 7 bond referendum

Dickinson ISD voters will be asked to consider a $70 million bond referendum on Saturday, May 7 to allow the district to build a second junior high school to accommodate the district's growing student enrollment of seventh and eighth grade students.

Early voting is available this week from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, April 25-29 and also 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, May 2-3 at any Galveston County early voting location, which locally includes McAdams Junior High, the Dickinson Community Center and the Bacliff Municipal Utility District office. On election day, May 7, polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at any Galveston County early voting location, including Dickinson City Hall and the Bacliff Municipal Utility District office within Dickinson ISD. A complete list of early voting and election day voting locations is available toward the bottom of this email newsletter.

The proposed bond referendum would not require a tax rate increase and would be covered through debt the district has paid off, rising home values and increased commercial and residential growth in the district. Dickinson ISD currently has one campus, McAdams Junior High School, which all students in grades 7-8 attend. As the district's student enrollment has continued to increase, enrollment at this campus has grown to 1,550 students, including more than 100 additional students just in the past year.

Dickinson ISD has seen a growth of 4,000 students over the past decade, increasing from 7,000 students to just short of 11,000 students this school year. This number is expected to continue to rise as more housing developments are underway on the west side of the district and in the Lago Mar subdivision starting near Tanger Outlet Mall.

The proposed junior high school would be built on the east side of the Dickinson ISD boundaries, on land the district already owns on FM 3426, which is also known as Strom Road. This would allow for one junior high school on both sides of the school district. If the bond is approved, the earliest the junior high could open in August 2018.
