Powerlifters and One-Act Play to compete this weekend
Congratulations go out to two different groups from Dickinson High School who have earned the chance to advance in their competitions this coming weekend.
DHS Powerlifting advancing to state competition
Six members of the Dickinson High School Powerlifting Team will travel to Abilene this weekend to compete in the State Powerlifting Competition. They include Chien Phan, Pablo Cavazos, Cournelious Vaughans, Kaylond North, Anietie Etuk and Chance Harmanson. The team is led by Coach Earl Ricicar.
They earned this opportunity after top finishes in their weight classes at the regional meet in early March. Collectively, if these six lift well at the state meet, Dickinson will have a chance at a repeat of last year with a second state championship.
DHS One-Act Play advances to Bi-District
The Dickinson High School Theatre Department's One-Act Play, "To Kill a Mockingbird," was named District Champion at the District 24-6A UIL One-Act Play District Competition held this past week. They were one of three in the district chosen to advance to the Bi-District contest to be held this Saturday, April 2 at Dickinson High School.
DHS will be the first performance at 1:30 p.m., followed by La Porte High School, Clear Creek High School, North Shore High School, Deer Park High School and Friendswood High School. Tickets are $5, which gets admission to all six performances. No late seating will be allowed after a performance begins.
The students involved in this year's DHS company are Jordan Whitfield, Wesley Batiste, Bria Rhoads, Jake Wadkins, Catherine Romero, Alia Brown, Maggie Bledsoe, Nyah Taylor, Gerik Lyssy, Ricky Miller, Haley Travis, Ashlynn Barrera, Falon Olver, Cameron Rutter, SaVon McAfee, Ambree Feaster, Angelo Gomez, Carolyn Richards, Colbee Dickson, Cathy Davis, Kelsey Richard, Lily Bodley, Izayah McCardell, and Brody Williams. The show is directed by Laurel Powell and Marisa Hataway. In addition to the company being named District Champs, the following individual awards were given out: Outstanding Technician to Bria Rhoads, Best Actor to Wesley Batiste, All Star Cast Awards to Jake Wadkins and Gerik Lyssy and an Honorable Mention All Star Cast award to Jordan Whitfield. DHS competed against the other seven schools in District 24-6A and took the most individual awards in the entire contest.

Engineering students get hands-on experience to prepare for underwater ROV competition
Thirteen students from the engineering program at Dickinson High School visited in March with representatives from Canyon Offshore, a part of Helix Energy Solutions based in Houston. Helix provides novel subsea technologies to offshore energy producers worldwide.
The students got to see the Canyon Offshore working shop where remotely-operated vehicles are repaired and new tools are designed and tested. The project managers and engineers talked to the students about the oil and petrochemical industry and gave the students hands-on experience with some of their equipment including a robotic arm and the camera control system for an underwater ROV. In addition, the engineers gave the students insight into careers in this field.
In May 2016, the advanced engineering students from DHS will be competing in an underwater ROV competition managed by the Marine Advanced Technology Education organization. The students have to design, fabricate, build and test a smaller version of the ROV they saw at Canyon Offshore's workshop in order to complete tasks that have direct real-world applications for the marine and subsea industries. The MATE team had a chance to run their design ideas by these engineering experts and get feedback on their ROV design.
