District seeking input
through online survey

School districts are required each year to evaluate how they are performing in eight areas, including Fine Arts, Wellness and Physical Education, Parent and Community Involvement, 21st Century Workforce Development, 2nd Language Acquisition, Digital Learning Environment, Dropout Prevention Strategies, and Educational Programs for Gifted and Talented Students.

As part of this process, through April 1, we are seeking input from the entire community of Dickinson ISD (parents, students, community members, and business representatives) through an online survey.

Your input is greatly appreciated by taking a few minutes to complete the survey by clicking here or accessing the survey through a link on the homepage of the school district website at www.dickinsonisd.org. It is recommended to use either the Chrome or Firefox internet browsers. The survey does not work correctly using Internet Explorer.

McAdams Theatre earns second

The McAdams Junior High Theatre Department recently earned second place in the Junior High UIL One-Act Play District Competition, hosted by Friendswood Junior High, with their performance of "The Rise and Rise of Daniel Rocket" by Peter Parnell. McAdams competed against six junior high campuses, with the top three schools being ranked.

In addition to school rankings, students can receive individual acknowledgments. McAdams received one All-Star Technician Award going to seventh grader Morgan Clark, one Honorable Mention All-Star Cast to eighth grader Alonzo Rangel, one All-Star Cast award to eighth grader Jared Wood and the overall Best Actress award to eighth grader Payton Hall.

The McAdams Theatre Department is under the direction of J. Kyle Crawford and Tara Jones Wright.

Houston Methodist St. John Hospital and DISD work to strengthen athletic partnership

Sports Medicine
The Dickinson High School athletic trainers are pictured with two senior athletes. They are left to right, front row, senior varsity basketball player Jere Mallet and Assistant Athletic Trainer Katy Cucco; back row, Houston Methodist Athletic Trainer Jenna Tubbs, senior varsity football player Jordan Myers and Head Athletic Trainer John Harmon.
A renewed agreement between Houston Methodist St. John Hospital and the Dickinson Independent School District Athletics extends their successful long-term partnership to 2022.

As the Official Health Care Provider for Dickinson ISD Athletics, Houston Methodist St. John Hospital provides sports medicine services, including licensed athletic trainers and support staff, as well as physician sideline coverage for varsity football games.

"Houston Methodist St. John Hospital has a long history supporting our students and our athletic programs," said Vicki Mims, Superintendent of Schools, Dickinson ISD. "Our new six-year agreement will provide continuity of care for our young athletes and enhance our athletic training and competitive edge."

As a team physician for Dickinson High School, Dr. Jason Leaseburg says he enjoys supporting the athletes. "Orthopedic sports injuries are very common among athletes," Dr. Leaseburg said. "The ability to immediately assess an injury and begin treatment on the playing field can help to improve an athlete's condition and outcome."

For nearly 20 years, Houston Methodist St. John Hospital has provided a contracted athletic trainer to work with Dickinson High School and junior high school students. Jenna Tubbs is a licensed athletic trainer who's been serving these students since 1998.

"Over the years, I have built relationships with so many of the athletes I've treated," Tubbs says. "Many of them still call me when they sustain injuries, even after they have graduated. Our licensed athletic trainers provide many services for our athletes - including preventive taping, training techniques and rehabilitation post-injury. And our athletic training facilities are state-of-the-art. These services are beneficial for the athletes, and cost-saving for parents and the school district as well."
Dunbar promotes parent involvement
with special parent and student events

Muffins with Mom
Donuts with Dad
Parent and family involvement is encouraged at all Dickinson ISD campuses through a number of different ways. However, Dunbar Middle School has found some special ways to continue family involvement as students make the transition from elementary to middle school.

Earlier this month, students were invited to bring their mom, grandma or other special mother-figure with them to school for "Muffins with Mom." More than 500 students and their guests attended the breakfast event to eat some tasty morning treats and have some bonding time with their "mom" by doing puzzles and completing a getting to know you activity. Students got to ask "mom" about her favorite thing from when she was in school, her dream place to live and other fun questions.

"We were hoping to promote conversation and open the lines of communication between our students and their parents. Often times, parents are so busy with work, school and activities that they don't get to sit down and have a conversation at night with their children," said Dunbar Counselor Valarie Coleman-Baker. "This is an opportunity for us to provide some one-on-one quality time between students and their parents."

Coleman-Baker said it is important to keep the lines of communication open so that as students get older they feel comfortable talking to their parents about problems or to seek advice.

Dunbar held a similar event, "Donuts with Dads," earlier this school year and had more than 600 attending including students with their father or father-figure. The school also involved BACODA (Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol) at both events to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and being aware of how drugs can be packaged to look like candy. The school's Communities in Schools program also played a part in the events.

In addition to these two events, Coleman-Baker said the school held a Trunk or Treat event earlier this school year to invite families to the school and get some Halloween treats. The school sponsored a Curriculum Night earlier this month to provide parents with ways to help their students with their homework.

Coleman-Baker said Dunbar is planning a family movie night later this spring to invite families to watch a movie together outside on the lawn.
