Public Education... A Texas Tradition
Plenty of exciting things are taking place in Texas public schools across the state each and every day, including many here in Dickinson ISD.
The theme this year for the annual Celebrate Texas Public Schools Month in March is "Public Education... A Texas Tradition." It fits well into the celebration this year of the district's 125th anniversary of the first school in Dickinson ISD and the many years of Gator traditions. Our nearly 11,000 students are excelling in academics, fine arts, athletics and extracurricular activities and have created a tradition of excellence for the past 125 years.
Dickinson ISD schools are planning several different events over the next couple of months to celebrate Texas public schools and showcase the exciting accomplishments of Dickinson ISD students and staff.
At Bay Colony Elementary, the first grade classes will entertain guests at a 6 p.m. March 10 music performance. Calder Road Elementary is also planning events for March 10, including the school's Gifted and Talented Project Fair from 4-5:30 p.m., followed by a second grade music performance at 6 p.m.
Hughes Road Elementary will host an Open House for parents from 5:30-7 p.m. April 12, while K.E. Little is planning an Open House and kindergarten music program at 6 p.m. April 14.
San Leon Elementary will showcase the kindergarten classes in a music program, "Spring Is Here," at 6 p.m. March 10. Parents at Silbernagel Elementary are invited to visit classes during an Open House and attend a fourth grade music program planned for 5:30-7 p.m. March 22.
The district's middle schools are planning Spring Curriculum Nights for parents and students to learn activities and skills to use at home to reinforce lessons taught at school. The Curriculum Nights are planned for 5:30-7 p.m. with Barber Middle School on March 9 and Dunbar Middle School on March 10. Dunbar is also planning a special morning event at 7:30 a.m. March 11 for "Muffins with Mom or Grandma."
McAdams Junior High is having a College and Career Day Fair on March 24 with students visiting a variety of booths with representatives from surrounding colleges, professionals representing various careers, as well as finding out more about the opportunities available in high school through the Dickinson High School Career and Technology Education program. Activities will also be available in class that day to help the students learn more about their career interests.
The Dickinson High School Theatre Department will be hosting the District 24-6A UIL One-Act Play Competition on March 24 with eight different area high schools participating. The DHS students are busy rehearsing for their play, "To Kill a Mockingbird." Performances start at 12 noon and run into the evening, including DHS as the fifth performance. Tickets are $5 for the full-day of performances.
