New attendance zones approved for 2016-2017
As Dickinson ISD prepares to surpass 11,000 students, we are busy preparing for the opening of two new campuses in our district.
The Lobit Education Village, including Louis G. Lobit Elementary and Elva C. Lobit Middle School, will open in August 2016 on the west side of the school district. To accommodate the opening of these two new campuses, the district has worked with a demographer to develop new elementary and middle school attendance zones, which were approved by the Board of Trustees earlier this month.
Letters will be mailed to parents letting them know which school their child will attend in 2016-2017. In the meantime, enlarged maps detailing the new boundaries are available near the front office at each elementary and middle school and at the Education Support Center. We have also added an online program on our website at www.dickinsonisd.org where parents can search their address to see to which schools they are zoned. A link to the program is available through the above graphic.
The district has planned three parent information meetings to allow parents to find out more about the new attendance zones. The meetings are open to all parents regardless of which school their child attends.

District earns national recognition with Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll
The Dickinson Independent School District recently received national recognition by the College Board by being named to the Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll. The district is one of only 130 school districts in the United States and only 22 in Texas to receive this honor.
The honor roll recognizes school districts which are excelling in creating opportunities for students from underrepresented groups, such as minority ethnic groups, students from low-income families and students who will be the first in their family to seek a college education. Districts on the honor roll demonstrate significant and consistent growth in the number of underrepresented and low-income students taking college-level courses and applying to four or more colleges.
"We have seen a significant increase in the number of students taking advanced placement courses and sitting for the AP exams which earns them valuable college credit. Our students can potentially graduate from high school with up to 18 hours of college credit by earning a qualifying score on AP exams," said Dr. Billye Smith, principal at Dickinson High School.
Dickinson ISD starts early preparing students for the SAT exam by giving the PSAT exam to all students in grades 8-10 to give them experience taking the test and time to prepare for the SAT test during the junior and senior years.
The staff at Dickinson High School has also pulled together a wide array of rigorous academic offerings and innovative college-preparation programs.
The AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness program designed to give students the skills they need to be successful in college, careers and life in general. AVID is offered as an elective course at the junior high and high school level but the instructional strategies taught in AVID such as notetaking, study skills, organizational skills and teamwork are infused in all grade levels in Dickinson ISD. In the AVID class, students also take field trips to area colleges, attend a college course and have learning opportunities at Rice University.
Dickinson High School offers a Parent University in the spring where parents come in the evening to rotate through sessions on supporting students who are college bound, college life, AP courses, preparing for the SAT, financial aid and more. The school also offers a parent night for incoming eighth grade students to introduce the parents to Pre-AP and AP courses touching on course offerings, expectations and AP exams.
