School hours increasing
Board approves school calendar for 2016-2017

Dickinson ISD students will have a five to fifteen minute longer school day in 2016-2017, but they will start school two days later and ease back into the school year with only three school days during the first week of school. This is part of the calendar for next school year approved by the Board of Trustees last week.

The change comes as a result of House Bill 2610 passed by the Texas Legislature which requires school districts to provide 75,600 minutes of instruction per year instead of basing the requirement on the number of student days. Prior to 2006, Dickinson ISD developed the calendar to have a shorter first week of school; however, with the passage of House Bill 10, school could start no earlier than the fourth Monday in August. This made it harder to include a shortened first week in the calendar.

Starting in August, the new Dickinson ISD secondary school hours will be 7:20 a.m.-2:35 p.m., which is only five minutes longer at the end of the school day than the current hours. Elementary students will start school 10 minutes earlier and go five minutes longer than the current hours with the new hours being 8:20 a.m.-3:35 p.m.

According to the approved 2016-2017 school calendar, students will start school on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The mid-week start for students also provides the district and teachers with two additional days for staff development and teacher preparation time with a total of seven days before the school year starts.

The majority of the calendar mirrors the calendar for this current year. In the first half of the school year, there will be a student and teacher holiday on Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day, a student holiday on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for parent conferences and Thanksgiving break for both students and teachers the week of Nov. 21-25. The first semester will end with an early release day on Friday, Dec. 16, followed by a two-week Christmas and New Year's Day break from Dec. 19-30.

Teachers will have a staff development day on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, followed by students returning from break and starting the second semester on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017. There are two bad weather makeup days built into the calendar on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017 and Monday, Feb. 20, 2017. These will be student and teacher holidays unless inclement weather earlier in the school year changes these into regular school days.

Students and teachers will have additional holidays with Spring Break the week of March 13-17, 2017, Good Friday April 14, 2017 and Memorial Day May 29, 2017.

The school year will end for students on Thursday, June 1, 2017 with an early release day. For those with seniors at Dickinson High School in 2016-2017, the Dickinson High School Class of 2017 graduation will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 at Sam Vitanza Stadium.

Career and Technical EducationLaw Enforcement Club project
to benefit Galveston County Resource and Crisis Center

A special project this month by the Dickinson High School Law Enforcement Club is reinforcing some important lessons for students that will help them in their careers, but it is also providing a special playroom for families facing unfortunate circumstances.

The 66 students in the DHS Law Enforcement Club are focusing on domestic violence this school year as their platform and using February, which is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, to work with the Galveston County Resource and Crisis Center. The students have been working hard this school year to raise money and seek out donations to provide a makeover to the center's playroom and possibly renovations to the bathroom if enough funds are raised.

"The students have been learning about how law enforcement can identify and steer people to available resources to help them overcome negative situations. It has been a humbling experience for the students," said Jenna Lussier, DHS criminal justice teacher. "The shelter is a safe harbor living arrangement for women and their children who have been displaced, to rebuild their lives while feeling safe from abuse. The children that live in these shelters are often emotionally and psychologically distressed and the playroom offers them a retreat from their previous family chaos."

The Law Enforcement Club is planning a long work weekend at the end of February to complete the project but for the next month they are trying to collect as many donations as possible to make the project a success and also have enough extra funds to spruce up the center's bathroom. Some big donations, including money from the Dickinson Fire Department, flooring materials from Flooring Source in Dickinson, paint and supplies from Sherwin Williams in Texas City and playroom DVD's and flooring labor from Glitz Nails, plus many other smaller donations, have pushed the project along. However, the group is still about $1,200 short of their goal to finish up the plans they have for the playroom. They are also seeking donations of new books, toys, educational supplies, entertainment needs and art supplies. In addition, the Law Enforcement Club is donating over $1,000 in food items to restock the shelter's pantry, which is low from the holidays.

"The exciting thing about this project is that is doesn't just help a single person, but a group of people," said Law Enforcement Club President Faith Blevins.

Vice President Nick Brown added, "Not every person's story is the same, they are all different. These people may be hurting, but I can do something to the best of my ability to help them."

Both Blevins and Brown said the project will be something to help them later in their careers. Blevins plans to pursue a career in either child therapy or law enforcement, and Brown will be going into the military and afterwards wants to be a police officer.

If you would like more information about donating money or items for the project you can contact Lussier at jlussier@dickinsonisd.org.
