Students and staff show their thankfulness throughout the year, but especially at holidays
Dickinson ISD has many things to be thankful for as we prepare to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday next week. We are thankful for our nearly 11,000 students and their families and our more than 1,400 employees. We are thankful for our community, which has cheered for the Gators during athletic events and fine arts events and school programs. We are thankful for our taxpayers who have supported us by investing nearly $300 million in our schools through bond referendums to build new schools and provide renovations and expansion for our continually growing student enrollment.
Our students show their thankfulness throughout the school year in many ways. This is something that is built into the regular school day through character development lessons, especially at the elementary level. In fact, the character trait focused on during November is citizenship which directly ties into thankfulness for our community.
For 15 years, our students, parents and staff have been supporting the Dickinson ISD community through the annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive to benefit the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center Food Pantry. Earlier this month, the district donated more than 17,000 items of food and non-perishable items plus $5,600 through the food drive. M.I. Lewis assists people living within the Dickinson ISD boundaries, so these donations directly benefit families in our own community.
| Bay Colony Elementary students are proud of collecting 6,290 items during Dickinson ISD's annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive. |
The district has a friendly competition among campuses to see which campus and classes can raise the most, based on student enrollment. Bay Colony Elementary is the top finisher this year, followed by the Dickinson Continuation Center and Dickinson Alternative Learning Center in second place and Silbernagel Elementary in third place. Winning classrooms included Karen Kelton's kindergarten class at Bay Colony, Kelley Trahan's third grade class at Calder Road, Ashley Bradford's kindergarten class at Hughes Road, Megan Morris' fourth grade class at K.E. Little, D'Ann Schneider and Crystal Trevino's fourth grade class at San Leon, Lezli Tonnies' second grade class at Silbernagel, Hailey Brannon's homeroom class at Barber, Sharon Boudreaux' homeroom class at Dunbar, Stefani Taylor's advisory class at McAdams, Veronique Angel's Interact Club and Lydia Thompson's fourth period class at Dickinson High School and Katherine Monaghan's class at DCC/DALC.
This next week when people start to think about Christmas shopping, Dickinson ISD employees will be shopping for items to make the Christmas holiday a little brighter for some students through the Empty Stocking program sponsored by the Dickinson Interfaith Lay Group. Dickinson ISD employees join other community organizations to help with this program by purchasing toys and clothes for children registration in the program. Hundreds of Dickinson ISD employees are among those choosing stockings which represent Dickinson ISD students and their younger siblings.
In addition, Dickinson High School gets involved by hosting the registration event in the school's library at the beginning of November. Students taking Spanish classes help with translating needs and the PALS program students watch young children while their parents get the family registered. Many retired Dickinson ISD teachers volunteer their time with the group during registration.
These are just a couple of big ways Dickinson ISD students and staff give back to the community during this season of thankfulness.

A special thanks to the Dickinson High School Junior Air Force ROTC and the PALS organization for assisting with picking up Stuff the Bus Food Drive donations at all the campuses.
