Annual Stuff the Bus food drive wraps up this week

Stuff the Bus Gators Give Back! This is the final week of the district's annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive to benefit the Food Pantry at the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center. Campuses are accepting donations of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products, as well as monetary donations.

Through their partnership with the Galveston County Food Bank, the center can purchase one dollar worth of United States Department of Agriculture subsidized food for only 10 cents. With this buying power, monetary donations go along way to providing food to families in need living within the Dickinson ISD boundaries.

Donations for the Stuff the Bus Food Drive can be made at any Dickinson ISD campus or the Education Support Center, 2218 FM 517 East in Dickinson through Nov. 5.

DHS SMART Lunch serving system
recognized with national award

SMART Lunch

A program started at Dickinson High School is getting national attention. SMART Lunch, which involves all 2,800 students eating in the same one-hour period, allows students to spend part of the time attending tutoring sessions, working on homework or attending a wide range of specialty clubs or groups. While other schools have implemented this type of program, Director of Food and Nutrition Services Judy Lee knew for it to be a success she needed to find a way to speed up the serving process.

"A large part of the success of the Smart Lunch operation is due to the food packaging," said Lee. "This special packaging system allows us to prepare fresh items and seal in the nutrition and quality on the day it is served. Each packaged entree item is a complete reimbursable meal."

Lee worked with kitchen consultants to design a serving system where students just have to simply grab a sealed, ready-to-go meal without having to go through a traditional serving line. Students have up to 22 choices every day in which to choose. Food is cooked hot and fresh the same day, but packaged in a new way.

Interest in the packaging system has grown. Lee recently accepted the Best Concept Award from Food Management magazine at their conference. She gave a presentation this past summer at the National School Nutrition Association Conference in Utah and has been asked to present at a state conference in North Carolina later this month. In addition, she has taken many phone calls from schools wanting more information and has given tours of the DHS kitchen and cafeteria design to many other schools as well.

Silbernagel students get chance to earn
a new bike through CYCLE program

Silbernagel bike program
Christmas could come a couple weeks early for students at Silbernagel Elementary who meet their goals as part of the CYCLE Program - Changing Young Children's Lives through Education. Community member Ernie Deats worked with Principal Leslie Burke to coordinate the program, which provides bikes to students in kindergarten through third grade who meet certain goals. In addition, Deats decided to donate the money to provide the opportunity to fourth graders. Students must meet certain reading goals, have 98 percent or better attendance, have good conduct and have their parents sign a contract agreeing to help the student reach their goals. The students who are successful will be given a bike on a special day in mid-December.
