With a 7-0 record, the Dickinson High School Gators will take on Friendswood High School this Friday, Oct. 23 at a 7 p.m. away football game at Friendswood ISD's Henry Winston Stadium. The stadium is located at 702 Greenbriar, on the Friendswood High School campus.
Due to limited parking in the vicinity of the stadium, Friendswood ISD recommends that all attendees consider using the shuttles provided to the stadium. Schools celebrate Unity Day and Red Ribbon Week
Students and staff across Dickinson ISD will take a stand against bullying on Wednesday, Oct. 21 by wearing orange to honor Unity Day. This is a day promoted by the National Bullying Prevention Center during October, which is National Bullying Prevention Month.
In addition to wearing orange, several schools will be doing activities on Wednesday as well as other times this month to take a stand against bullying. Some of the activities include classroom lessons, signing posters, making class and school Unity chains.
Red Ribbon Week will end the month with special days the week of Oct. 26-30 to pledge to be drug-free. Students and staff will each be provided with a ribbon, sponsored by MaximGroup, to wear during Red Ribbon Week. Check with your child's school for details on creative theme days during the week.

Thunderbirds Aerial Team
meets with DHS students
Some students at Dickinson High School had a special experience last week when they got a chance to meet some of the demonstration pilots participating in the Thunderbirds Aerial Demonstration Team. The team was in town performing at the Wings Over Houston Airshow at Ellington Field and chose to visit Dickinson High School since the school offers an Air Force Junior ROTC program.
In addition to the 115 cadets in the DHS AFJROTC, another 270 students got the chance to watch a Thunderbirds video, sit through a question and answer session and meet the pilots.
The Thunderbirds serve as ambassadors for the United States Air Force and travel across the United States sharing their experiences and presenting aerial manuevers at public events and air shows.

Construction progressing toward August 2016
opening of new Lobit Education Village
| Pictured is the back side of the Lobit Education Village. Located on the far left is the middle school gymnasium, then the combined kitchen area and dining hall for both schools and the elementary gymnasium on the far right. This will also be the bus drop-off/pick-up area for both schools. |
The new Lobit Education Village is starting to take shape as steel beams are up throughout the school complex and crews are busy working on decking and roofing. Depending upon weather conditions over the next couple of months, crews plan to have the building closed-in by late December or early January to begin interior work.
The Lobit Education Village will open in August 2016 with Louis G. Lobit Elementary for students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade and Elva C. Lobit Middle School for fifth and sixth grade students. The district is currently working with a demographer to develop new attendance zones for all Dickinson ISD elementary and middle school students to accommodate the opening of the two new schools. These new attendance boundaries will be finalized and announced in the spring and take affect in August for the 2016-2017 school year.
The education village is a new design for Dickinson ISD featuring two schools connected on the same property. While they will be two separate schools with separate entrances, they will share some common facilities such as a library, kitchen and mechanical systems.

Alumni are staying connected and motivating students as tutors in the district AVID program
This is the season for high school homecomings. It is a time when alumni come back to visit their school and attend a high school football game. However, for three Dickinson High School alumni, they have found a way to stay connected on a regular basis and make an impact on the lives of current students.
Tiffany Maddox, a 1997 graduate; Erin Crowley, 2012; and Mayra Garza, 2015; are all tutors in the AVID program, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The program has been in place for four years at DHS and is now offered at the district's junior high and two middle schools. The district has approximately 300 students involved in the program.
AVID is a college readiness program designed to give students the skills they need to be successful in college, careers and life in general. These include study and note-taking skills, organizational skills and learning to work with all different groups of people as a team.
An important aspect of the program is employing students from local colleges to serve as tutors. They provide assistance to the AVID students on assignments and are available to answer questions about college and life after high school.
Tiffany Maddox has seen a lot of changes at DHS in terms of both facilities and also resources available to students since she graduated 18 years ago. "AVID is the best thing they offer at DHS that we didn't have when I attended high school," said Maddox.
Maddox has a busy schedule working full-time, attending the University of Houston seeking a bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration and has children of her own in the AVID program in DISD, but she finds tutoring once a week very rewarding.
"It prepares the students for college but also teaches life skills that prepare them for more than just school, such as responsibility, organization, collaborating with others and being a leader," said Maddox.
Erin Crowley is pursuing a degree in communications at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. "I really like seeing someone have a light bulb moment and figure out something they are having a hard time understanding. It is a good feeling," said Crowley.
Mayra Garza graduated from DHS just four months ago and was in the same place as the students she tutors as she was part of the AVID program for three years. She is now attending College of the Mainland to pursue a career as a graphic designer.
"I want to make sure they know everything I didn't," said Garza. "They need to learn to take notes, not procrastinate, use a planner and be prepared."
Garza said being involved in the AVID program changed her outlook on her future and life goals. She even convinced her sister to get involved in the AVID program.
"I love the family atmosphere. The students can always go to each other for help and you get to meet a variety of people that you wouldn't normally get to meet," she said.
