K.E. Little students have character

K.E. Little Character Day

K.E. Little Elementary students honored Character Day this past week wearing the colors of the Six Pillars of Character on September 18. This is the third year for the worldwide Character Day event. K.E. Little students recognized being extra Trustworthy (blue), Respectful (yellow/gold), Responsible (green), Fair (orange), Caring (red) and Citizenship (purple).

All students have learned about the Character Education traits and practiced them each day. They are focusing on the Caring pillar by participating in a fundraiser for B.I.G. Love, a program that helps cancer patients at Texas Children's Hospital.

DHS Band gets ready for month of marching contests starting Saturday, September 26

Band programs in Dickinson ISD are an important and successful part of the fine arts offerings at the secondary level.

The McAdams Junior High bands are consistently recognized with high honors at music performances, while the Dickinson High School band has competed at the UIL State Marching Contest many times, including five state championships while in the 4A division. The band has also earned the Sweepstakes Award for more than 30 years during concert season in honor of top scores in both concert and sight-reading performances.

Starting in the sixth grade, students have the opportunity to participate in the band program. Dickinson ISD has approximately 220 sixth grade band students, 400 at McAdams Junior High and nearly 300 in the Dickinson High School Marching Band. High school band is a huge commitment on the part of the students who spend countless hours practicing their instrument as well as learning marching routines in the fall and special concert music in the spring.

The next month is a busy time for the DHS Marching Band as they take the performance they have practiced during the summer, after school and during half-time football game performances to several marching contests. The contests start this Saturday, Sept. 26 when the band is one of 18 bands participating in the Friendswood Marching Festival. The DHS band is scheduled to perform in the preliminary competition at 12:15 p.m. in Friendswood ISD's Henry Winston Stadium. The top bands will be announced at 2:30 p.m. to advance to the finals competition at 5:30 p.m.

The DHS Band will travel to the Bands of America Contest on Oct. 3 at Woodforest Bank Stadium, 19115 David Memorial Drive, in Shenandoah, Texas. Thirty-two bands from across the state will participate, including DHS with an early 7:45 a.m. performance time.

UIL marching contest is scheduled for Oct. 17 at Pearland ISD's stadium, "The Rig," 3775 S. Main in Pearland. The DHS band is scheduled to perform at 2:15 p.m. This is not a contest advancement year for UIL 6A marching, so 6A bands will only compete at the regional level for a ranking of one through three. The goal is to earn a straight "1" ranking with all three judges scoring the band at the top level.

The DHS Marching Band will host its own contest, "Gator Marching Festival," on Oct. 24 at Sam Vitanza Stadium with 13 bands competing. They will end the marching contest season on Oct. 31 by traveling to the Bands of American Super Regional Marching Contest at the Alamodome in San Antonio as one of 65 bands competing.

This year's marching band production is set to a fairytale theme, "Once Upon a Dream." Featured music will include "Aurora Awakes" by John Mackey, excerpts from the "Sleeping Beauty Ballet" by Tchaikovsky and excerpts from "Maleficent" by James Newton Howard. The performance will include a storybook prop as well as canvas painted fairytale scenes to guide the audience through the performance.
