Texas comes to life for four students during summer camp experience
The historical events and places students learn about in school took on a different meaning this past summer for four Dickinson ISD students who had the opportunity to experience them in person.
Barber Middle School fifth graders Lazaro Flores and Nikolas Ranjel, Dunbar Middle School sixth grader Mikhail Perez and McAdams Junior High eighth grader Dylan Lam were chosen to participate in an Education in Action's summer 2015 Lone Star Leadership Academy camp. These students were selected based on academic success, leadership ability, recommendation from a teacher or principal and involvement in school and community activities.
The camps, which are held in three different areas across the state, are open to students in grades 4-8 to give them a chance to explore parts of Texas and learn about Texas leaders they have studied in school, while also allowing the students to develop leadership skills. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity and practice presentation skills in leadership groups.
Lazaro and Nikolas were chosen as fourth graders while they were attending Silbernagel Elementary and K.E. Little Elementary, respectively. They both attended their week-long camp in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. It was also a first experience at spending a week away from home at a camp.
"I met a lot of new people. I enjoyed learning about Spanish explorers and visiting a museum," said Lazaro.
Nikolas said the camp sounded interesting because he enjoys history. "Sometimes, if you really get into reading about history, it feels like you are actually there," he said. Some of his favorite parts of his week at camp included rock climbing and visiting museums, such as the Ripley's Believe It or Not Wax Museum.
The Dallas and Fort Worth area camp included visiting the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Career speakers introduced participants to a wide variety of unique career and internship opportunities during each camp.
Lazaro would like to be a doctor one day, while Nikolas is interested in being a scientist. "Scientists get to use different tools to investigate objects and conduct experiments," Nikolas said.
