DHS students partner with Dickinson Fire Department to refurbish 1942 fire truck

1942 Fire Truck The school year promises to be an exciting and valuable experience for students in the Dickinson High School Auto Mechanics program as they will get hands-on experience refurbishing a piece of history.

The Dickinson Volunteer Fire Department is partnering with the DHS Auto Mechanics students to refurbish a 1942 Seagrade fire truck, which was donated to the department earlier this year by a local citizen. The fire truck was one of only seven built for the United States Navy and was first used by the Navy in California, said Chris Eames, who serves as DVFD Second Assistant Fire Chief.

"This is a pretty neat donation for the fire department because the fire truck was built in 1942, which is the same year the department was formed. We are fixing to celebrate our 75th anniversary in a couple years so having this piece of history from the same year the fire department was established is special," said Eames. "It really shows how the fire service has evolved from the 40's to the present."

The fire department is giving the students a budget of up to $5,000 to use to refurbish the fire truck, which needs engine and brake work, as well as maintenance to make the water pump and other fire truck aspects operational. The fire truck body and paint is still in good condition.

"Our goal is to have the fire truck running and operational enough to make its debut at the DHS Homecoming Parade on Wednesday, September 30. After the Homecoming Parade, the students will continue to work on it to have it completely finished by December for the Rotary Club Christmas Parade," said Trish Lankford, Director of Career and Technical Education and Career Readiness.

Eames said the partnership is a winning situation for both the fire department and the auto mechanics program. The fire department is completely made up of volunteers and no one has the time needed to put into making repairs to the fire truck. The auto mechanics program is always looking for vehicles which need repairs, to give students practical, real-life experiences using the skills they learn in class.

Lankford also plans to work with the DHS welding program to possibly see about getting benches built and installed in the fire truck to give people a place to sit during parades. Ultimately, that is the goal of the fire department is to have the fire truck participate in parades and other community events and highlight a successful community partnership to restore a piece a history.
