DHS football season kicks off

Scrimmage Scrimmage Game
The Dickinson High School football season will kick off tonight, Friday, August 21 with a "Our Day To Shine" Gators Scrimmage game against the Dobie High School Longhorns. The freshman team will play at 4:30 p.m., followed by junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. Admission will be $1 per person with all proceeds benefitting the Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation's Benevolence Fund. This fund assists athletes and coaches with special needs or hardships.

Meet the Gator
The community will get a chance to "Meet the Gators" at a pep rally at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 26 in Sam Vitanza Stadium. The event, which is free and open to the public, will showcase fall sports as well as the Dickinson High School Marching Band, the Dickinson Diamonds and the Cheerleaders. Players and coaches for tennis, golf, cross country, volleyball and football will be introduced. The community Little Gators and Lions football teams will also be included in the event.

New Guidelines for Sam Vitanza Stadium
The Gators successful 2014 season and our growing student enrollment have resulted in increased attendance at Sam Vitanza Stadium varsity football games. As a result, the district has implemented new rules and will be better enforcing old rules.

Starting with the 2015 football season, all children and students below the ninth grade must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or they will not be admitted into the event. In addition, all students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade must be supervised by the parent or adult guardian during the entire game. Student tickets will only admit high school students.

Please note that the rules were put in place to ensure an enjoyable and safe stadium experience for all. These rules will be posted at the stadium and can also be found on the school district website homepage at www.dickinsonisd.org.

When Dickinson ISD students and teachers start the new school year, among them will be hundreds of new students, teachers and staff joining the Gator family. Last week, the district welcomed 130 new teachers and other professional employees to the district during training days specifically for new teachers.
Students and staff will also see a few new administrators, as well as some familiar faces in new positions at campuses and in the Education Support Center.

Leading the district's seventh and eighth grade students at McAdams Junior High is Rachelle Joseph. She comes to Dickinson ISD with 17 years of experience, all in Galveston ISD. Her experience includes five years as an elementary principal, four years as a middle school assistant principal and eight years as a math teacher.

Kelly Jackson is joining Hughes Road Elementary as principal. She has 21 years of education experience, most recently serving as a principal in Alvin ISD.

Andrea Zepeda was promoted to principal at Dunbar Middle School after serving as the assistant principal since December 2014. Joining Dunbar as the new assistant principal is Jennifer Kaatz, who comes from Pasadena ISD.

Dickinson High School will be welcoming three new assistant principals. DHS Testing Coordinator Kim Fouts and Dickinson ISD Curriculum Specialist Laura Breaux will be moving to assistant principal positions, while Pasadena ISD teacher Paul Trahan will be joining Dickinson High School to serve as an assistant principal.

The district's Educational Services Department has been reorganized following the retirement of three employees. Several familiar faces and one new face are now part of this important area headed by Deputy Superintendent for Educational Services Carla Voelkel. Lee Courville is joining Dickinson ISD as Director of Elementary Programs, while Dr. Vonda Washington is moving from Principal at Dunbar to Director of Secondary Programs. Former McAdams Principal Dr. Jeff Pack is the department's new Director of Assessment, Evaluation and Compliance. Anne Gunning is retiring, but she will be returning later this fall in the part-time role of Director of Federal Programs.

The Athletic Department will see a familiar face in a new role with former DHS assistant principal Eric Anderson moving into the role of Assistant Athletic Director.
