March is Athletic Training Month...

For the month of March, Athletic Trainers across America are being recognized for helping people prevent injuries and stay active. March is Athletic Training Month.

At Dickinson ISD, the district is proud to have three very well trained athletic trainers on staff in John Harmon, Katy Cucco and Jenna Tubbs, who is employed by Houston Methodist. These three, with the help of student trainers, keep DISD athletes in great physical shape and out of harm's way.

Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians. The services provided by ATs comprise prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. ATs work under the direction of physicians, as prescribed by state licensure statutes.

"On just about any given day we can have five, six or even more athletes from different sports in the training room at one time," Student Trainer Vanessa Vo said. "We help Coach Harmon and the other athletic trainers give treatments, and I like all the things we learn from them."

Dickinson High School has 14 sports, in addition to junior high sports. At just about any time of the year there are multiple sports going on at one time. In the fall, there is football, volleyball and cross country. In the winter you have boys and girls basketball and soccer, powerlifting and track.

Swimming, tennis and golf may not require as much attention from the athletic training staff, but they are year-round sports. In the spring there is baseball and softball. The training staff also works with dancers from the Diamonds Drill Team and cheerleaders when needed.

"We couldn't do our jobs as coaches without them," Athletic Director John Snelson said. "They are even more vital than the coaches in some ways. Any success we may have is a direct result of the work they do for us and the student athletes."

A day in the life of the athletic trainers at Dickinson ISD may include working for 12 to 15 hours per day. Some days start off early before school at six or seven in the morning, giving treatments to athletes before school. As the day goes on, there is paperwork that must be completed for every athlete, more treatments and then getting ready for practice and games. The trainers are sometimes spread thin with multiple sports going on and they stay long after games are over giving treatments or dealing with injuries.

The good news for Dickinson ISD is having a great student athletic trainer program. Student trainers include seniors Michelle Butler, Allicia Strambler and Vo; juniors  Lauren Drenner and Sierra Pineault; sophomores Jacky Martinez, Brianna Olver, Ashley Rodriguez and Maylyn Topfer; and freshman  Destiny Arredondo, Cierra Florence, Caleb Gendron, Morell Jenkins and Lourdes Santos.

"We are very proud of these students," Tubbs said. "They work hard every day and are very dedicated to this program."
