"Blue-Out"
Playing for the District Championship
Gators at Creek, 1 p.m. Saturday

It will be the game of the season this Saturday as the Dickinson High School Varsity Gators football team takes on the Clear Creek High School Wildcats at 1 p.m. in Clear Creek ISD's Veterans Memorial Stadium. The winner of the game will be the District 24-6A District Champion. DHS is 8-0 for the season and 5-0 in district play, while Clear Creek is 6-2 overall and 5-0 in district.

To show our support for the Gators, everyone is encouraged to wear blue to the game and "blue-out" the Creek stadium. Wear your Gator blue on Saturday to support our Gators and show your Dickinson spirit.

Tickets will be on sale in advance at the Field House on the Dickinson High School campus from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-12 noon Friday. Tickets purchased in advance are $6 for adults and $4 for students. All tickets purchased at the gate on Saturday afternoon are $8 each.

Clear Creek High School is hosting a number of activities on Saturday, including a Region Choir event. This means that parking around Clear Creek Veterans Memorial Stadium may be a challenge. Those attending the game are encouraged to carpool to the extent possible. Guests may park in the CCISD Education Support Center parking lot and the Clear Creek Intermediate School campus, both of which are adjacent to Clear Creek High School and to the stadium. Cars parked in the surrounding business parking lots will be towed at the owner's expense. Plan to arrive early to avoid delays due to traffic and/or parking.

Noisemakers are not allowed in the stadium, including, but not limited to air horns, plastic or party-type horns, whistles, cowbells, cans filled with rocks, etc.

BAND IS STATE BOUND!!!

Gator Band qualifies for UIL-6A State Marching Band Contest, send-off planned for 10:30 a.m. November 4

The Dickinson High School Gator Marching Band will be headed to San Antonio next week to compete in the UIL-6A State Marching Band Contest.

Of the 35 teams competing at area competition this past Saturday, the Gator Marching Band was one of only seven bands earning the opportunity to advance to the state competition. The state contest is held every two years for each UIL division. This year is a state year for 4A and 6A.

The DHS Band is scheduled to perform their marching show, "Arabian Nights," at 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 4 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Of the 37 teams competing in the preliminary competition during the day, 10 bands will be chosen to advance to the finals competition that evening beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Big send-off planned at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to cheer the band to state

Dickinson ISD is planning a huge send-off to celebrate the band's trip to the state contest. The band will leave Dickinson High School on chartered buses at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 4 and travel down FM 517 before getting on Interstate-45 to head to San Antonio. Businesses along FM 517 between DHS and I-45, as well as parents and community members, are encouraged to show their Gator spirit by coming out to cheer on the band and putting up banners outside their business or good luck messages of their business marquees.

Congratulations to the 300 members of the DHS Gator Marching Band and their directors! The school district and the community are very proud of your accomplishments!

Ready for Halloween
Students learn about the amount of sugar in popular candy

Students in Jennifer Rady's third grade class at Silbernagel Elementary recently had an eye-opening presentation on the amount of sugar contained in popular candies given out at Halloween. Lacy Willey, registered dietitian and nutrition educator, in the Dickinson ISD Food and Nutrition Department used two-gram sugar cubes to demonstrate that elementary age students should have no more than 12 grams of sugar in a day (the equivalent of six sugar cubes). The students then were able to read the labels of popular candy to see how many grams of sugar are in a single piece of candy. Students quickly realized how little candy they should have to stay under 12 grams for the day.

Dickinson Continuation Center helping students reach the high school graduation milestone

DCC Clap-Out High school graduation... October 24, 2014. It is not a traditional date associated with high school graduation but for Dickinson Continuation Center senior Jazzee Rideaux, it will always be a special memory of when she donned a blue Dickinson cap and gown and walked down the DCC hallway for her "clap-out" as her classmates cheered her on.

Rideaux, the first DCC graduate for 2014-2015, finished all of her high school requirements this past month and is now a graduate of Dickinson ISD. She still plans to participate in the Dickinson High School graduation ceremonies next June, but is free to start the next chapter of her life now as a high school graduate.

The Dickinson Continuation Center opened in 2004 to provide students a voluntary, non-traditional educational environment to meet their individual needs. DCC is open, through an application process, to high school age students living in Dickinson ISD who have experienced difficulty achieving success in a more traditional high school setting. Many times these students have difficult family situations, no longer live at home or have family requirements or jobs that prevent them from succeeding in a traditional high school schedule. Other times, students may be excelling in high school but choose DCC to graduate early because they are ready to start college, technical school or enlist in the military.

By using an accelerated program through a combination of independent online courses and small teacher-taught courses in person, students are able to catch up on courses and, for some classes, finish a semesters worth of study in only nine weeks.

"Our students have to be very self-motivated and an advocate for themselves. Some students just do not perform well in the hustle and bustle of a traditional high school setting. They do better in our small, quieter setting," said DCC Principal Wendy Chide.

Last school year, DCC was proud to have 79 graduates. They currently have their maximum of 62 students; however, because students are finishing at different times they are always adding new students from their waiting list.

The school gives priority to juniors and seniors but does offer admission to freshman and sophomores whom they think are ready for the program. Juniors and seniors can attend on a half-day only schedule, while freshman and sophomores must attend all day.

"Our DCC students must meet all the same requirements as any other Texas high school student, including attendance and passing all required courses and state required assessments," said DCC Counselor Amanda Scardino. "As soon as a student finishes a course, I work closely with him or her to decide on the next course, which many times means starting a course at varying times."

DCC graduates are included in the DHS graduation; however, to mark the occasion when it happens, the school has a "clap-out," which serves as a chance to cheer for the graduate but also is a visual reminder to the classmates that if they keep working hard, they can reach this important milestone as well.
