Career and Technology Survey

Dickinson ISD is conducting a survey to gather information from multiple sources on the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. In particular, we are trying to reach parents and Dickinson High School alumni. Teacher and current student surveys will be conducted at school.

The survey is estimated to take about 10 minutes. The anonymous information gathered in this survey will be used as part of our review and evaluation that will guide the future of the CTE program in Dickinson ISD. Parents and graduates are asked to click on one of the links below to complete the survey.

This same format was used in the spring and was well received by parents. Student schedules will be available in the Gator Mall area from 4-6:30 p.m. Parents are free to pick up a copy of their student's schedule, visit classrooms and meet teachers anytime between 4-7 p.m.

Those desiring a conference with the teacher will be able to schedule one at the open house for one of the two Parent Conference Days, which are next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Unity Day, Red Ribbon Week, Breast Cancer Awareness all supported during October

Throughout October, Dickinson ISD students are showing support for important causes - from being united against bullying on Unity Day, taking a stand against drugs during Red Ribbon Week, or showing their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Elementary students across the district will be united against bullying on Tuesday, October 21 in honor of Unity Day. Sponsored by the National Bullying Prevention Center, the group encourages everyone to wear clothing or display signs in the color orange to call for an end to bullying. Students will learn about the importance of being good to each other and looking out for their friends and classmates while creating paper unity chains with a student name on each link.

Red Ribbon Week is an annual celebration in schools at the end of October where students declare to be drug free in many fun ways while also being taught about the serious dangers of drugs. Students will wear red ribbons the week of October 27-31 declaring "United we Stand for a Drug-Free Land" sponsored by MaximGroup. Special theme days are planned at each campus allowing students to take a stand against drugs in creative ways. Dressing as your favorite storybook character for "Books are better than drugs," wearing crazy socks for "Sock out drugs," or sporting college shirts for "I'm too smart to do drugs" are just a few from a long list of days planned during the week.

Another popular theme day is "Be a Hero every day and be Drug Free" with students wearing camo or superhero clothes. Bay Colony Elementary will have their annual hero day on Tuesday, October 28 as a special day to invite our local heroes, including parents serving in the military, police officers, firefighers and emergency personnel to come to the school in their uniforms and greet students.

DePelchin Children's Center will also be sending out representatives to several Dickinson ISD schools to talk to students about the dangers of drugs and staying drug-free. Trivia questions during announcements and door decorating contests are just some of the other ways campuses are getting across the drug-free message during Red Ribbon Week.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is another way Dickinson ISD students and staff are showing support for the community. A "pink out" was held at the Dickinson High School volleyball games this week and a "pink out" is planned at the October 24 DHS varsity football game against Friendswood. Fans are encouraged to wear pink shirts to show support for breast cancer awareness. Dunbar Middle School is going a step further and having a "pink out" day during the school day as well. The DHS Diamonds Dance Team Booster Club is selling pink shirts with a portion of the proceeds donated to breast cancer awareness.

DHS freshmen learn important financial lessons during the school's annual Reality Town event

The Dickinson High School freshman class got an opportunity this past Wednesday to see what it is like to be a 30-year-old adult for the day. For the sixth year, DHS hosted Reality Town, where all freshman students get a crash course on the financial challenges of being an adult.

During the hands-on simulation, students were assigned a career and salary based on the student's interests but also their academic performance. In addiiton, they were randomly assigned a family scenario of whether they were single or married, had children, had a spouse that worked, etc.

They were taught real-life financial concepts such as budgeting, paying bills, debit cards and savings accounts. During the Reality Town simulation, students faced reality with careers, salaries, families and the associated financial responsibilities of the adult world including taxes, groceries, housing and transportation. Students were then instructed to make financial decisions regarding their Reality Town family and their monthly expenditures as the visited the 22 different businesses, including housing, medical, child care, transportation, and more which were housed by local professionals, community volunteers, parents and DISD administrators.
