Homecoming week to kickoff with parade, pep rally and carnival

The Gators are ready to "Hunt the Falcons," as we prepare to celebrate Homecoming, throughout the week of September 22. Several activities are planned to get the entire community in the Gator spirit.

Excited about an impressive 3-0 record in non-district games, the Dickinson High School Fighting Gators will kick-off the district games with Homecoming on Friday, Sept. 26. The 7 p.m. game will be held in Sam Vitanza Stadium against the Clear Lake High School Falcons.

Before game day, Dickinson High School is planning a full evening of family-friendly events on Wednesday, Sept. 24 with a community parade, pep rally and carnival.

The Homecoming parade will start at 5:30 p.m. at the shopping center located at the corner of FM 517 and 1266, the same starting location as the past several years. The parade will include decorated floats and participants from DHS clubs and organizations, other Dickinson ISD schools and community organizations. Line-up for those participating in the parade is at 4:45 p.m. The parade will travel east on FM 517, turn left in front of DHS on Baker Drive and travel down to Sam Vitanza Stadium.

When the parade arrives at Sam Vitanza Stadium, a community pep rally is planned highlighted by the crowing of the Homecoming Queen and King, introduction of the entire Homecoming Court and the DHS varsity football team. This is different from past years in that the queen will be announced at the pep rally instead of at the game on Friday evening. During halftime at the Homecoming game, the queen and king will be recognized again and will participate in the ceremonial drive around the track.

Immediately following the pep rally, DHS is bringing back the Homecoming community carnival with high schools clubs and organizations sponsoring a food, game or activity booth. The carnival will be located next to the stadium in the band practice parking lot in front of DHS. The carnival is open to the community until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Tickets to use at all the booths will be sold for 50 cents each.

Dickinson High School students will be getting in the spirit throughout the week with special Spirit Week theme days. The week begins with DHS students wearing tie-dye on Monday for "Tie-up the Falcons," followed by animal print on Tuesday for "Gator Spirit is Wild," camo on Wednesday for "Hunt the Falcons," dressing as twins on Thursday for "Fake out the Falcons," and ending the week by wearing their favorite team jersey for "We've got Spirit!" The Spirit Week dress days are designed to let the students have fun; however, all students are expected to maintain appropriate dress during the week (no shorts, spaghetti straps, etc.).

Community volunteers needed for
DHS Reality Town event on October 15

Have you ever wished that you had been taught the importance of financial responsibility and the tangled web of debt before you were required to face the task?  Reality Town teaches these often times overlooked lessons of life to students.
Dickinson High School's ninth grade students will be participating in this program on Wednesday, October 15.

Reality Town is a hands-on simulation in which students learn real-life financial concepts such as budgeting, budgeting bills, debit card and savings accounts.  The program teaches the value of education and its effect on potential earnings.

During the Reality Town simulation, students face reality with careers, salaries, families and the associated financial responsibilities of the adult world including taxes, groceries, housing and transportation.  Students are then instructed to make financial decisions regarding their Reality Town family and their monthly expenditures as they visit twenty-two different business including housing, medical, child care, transportation, etc. which are staffed by local professionals, community volunteers and parents.

In order to run this program effectively and make it a success, parent and community volunteers are critically needed.  A brief training will take place on the day of the Reality Town simulation and

volunteers will be given detailed, step-by-step instructions on what to do when students stop by to do business and make payments at the volunteer's location. Training is planned from 7:20-8:30 a.m. and then students will rotate through in four different groups from 8:35 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Lunch is provided for volunteers at the end of the last session.

If you are interested in participating as a volunteer in this Reality Town simulation that we call "the experience of a lifetime," click on the link below to register.
