Lighted Windows Open Doors

DHS "Lighted Windows Open Doors"

program underway for 2014-2015

The doors are open and the lights are on in the Dickinson High School library every Tuesday and Thursday night starting this week for the school's "Lighted Windows Open Doors" program. Started in 2006, this program provides teachers for homework help, computer availability and other library resources for all Dickinson ISD students as well as the community.

From 5-8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday night, DHS teachers are available in the library to help students of any age who have questions about homework or other schoolwork. In addition, the library resources of books, reference materials and computers are available for student use as well as community use. It is a great resource for those without computer access to type a paper, use the Internet to complete a job application, do research, etc.

Gators prepare to take on Texas City High School in last non-district game

It will be a Galveston County match-up Friday night, September 12 when the Dickinson High School Gators welcome neighboring Texas City High School to Sam Vitanza Stadium for a 7 p.m. football game.

The Gators are on a winning streak with a 2-0 record this year including wins against Bay High School from Florida and most recently Summer Creek High School in Humble ISD.

DHS has an open week next week with no games as they prepare to start district play with the school's Homecoming game on Friday, September 26 against Clear Lake High School.

DHS plans open house September 18

Dickinson High School will host their annual Back to School Open House on Thursday, September 18. A "come and go" style open house is planned for parents to visit classrooms and meet the student's teachers.

This same format was used in the spring and was well received by parents. Student schedules will be available in the Gator Mall area from 4-6:30 p.m. Parents are free to pick up a copy of their student's schedule, visit classrooms and meet teachers anytime between 4-7 p.m.

New elementary and middle school to be
named in honor
of Louis and Elva Lobit

Hundreds of Dickinson Independent School District students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade will get a new school experience in two years when the district opens the "Lobit Education Village."

Names for the new elementary and middle school, approved by voters in the May 2014 bond referendum, were chosen by the Dickinson ISD Board of Trustees at their September 8 board meeting. Louis G. Lobit Elementary School and Elva C. Lobit Middle School will be located on FM 517 between Calder Road and Cemetery Road. The entire complex will be known as the Lobit Education Village.

The two schools will sit on 40 acres donated to the district in 1974 by the Lobit family. At that time, the land was named the Louis G. Lobit school site and the district was allowed to keep the land with the stipulation that the district would use the land someday as an educational facility.

Excitedly, that time is now and the district is building a state-of-the-art complex with many amenities to reach the growing needs of students and teaching staff in the 21st century. Growth in the west part of Dickinson ISD has expanded greatly over the past few years and with the new Lago Mar development underway around the Tanger Outlet Mall, there is no end in sight for student growth.

The Lobit school site will feature an education village concept, which is a relatively new design choice being used by districts in school construction to allow for common or joint use of resources. The two schools will be separate campuses with separate entrances, administrative and school staff, but they will be connected in some areas such as the cafeteria and kitchen areas, library, mechanical systems, bus lane and parking areas.

The Lobits were married in 1943 and were both strong supporters of education and the fine arts. They lived in Houston but spent a great deal of time in the Dickinson/League City area on the "Lobit Farm." Elva C. Lobit, who had a background in photography and singing, dedicated much time to the fine arts and was one of three founding members of the Houston Grand Opera in 1955. The Lobits were also members and sponsors of the Houston Symphony.

Louis G. Lobit was born in Galveston, where his father, Joseph Edward Lobit, was a cotton banker. Louis lived in Houston most of his life and was successful in purchasing property across Texas, but especially in the Dickinson area. In addition to the property donated to Dickinson ISD, he donated property to Galveston County on FM 646 for a park to be named after his wife - Elva Lobit Park.

Unfortunately, Elva passed away in 1977 before seeing the park constructed and Louis followed her shortly thereafter in 1980.

Construction of the Lobit Education Village is expected to start later this fall, at which time, the district will celebrate with a groundbreaking ceremony. The schools are scheduled to open in August 2016.
