Graduation Caps

Congratulations DHS Class of 2014...

567 reasons to be "Gator Proud"

Dickinson ISD had 567 reasons to be "Gator Proud" this past week as the Dickinson High School Class of 2014 donned their Gator blue gowns and filed into Sam Vitanza Stadium to receive their diplomas. Led by Valedictorian Stephen Romero and Salutatorian Anastasia Novak, the DHS Class of 2014 is the school's largest graduating class.

With nearly $2.8 million in scholarships, some of these graduates will continue their education at colleges throughout Texas, while others are traveling across the country to universities in New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Georgia to name a few. Other students will go directly into the workforce, taking advantage of career and technology training and certifications they have earned while still in high school.

The weeks leading up to graduation are filled with many old and new traditions alike to commemorate the ending of an important chapter in each student's life. In addition to the long-standing traditions such as Prom and Senior Breakfast, the school added a new tradition in 2013 -- the Walk of Honor. At the end of Senior Breakfast, Principal Billye Smith and the DHS Band Drum Line lead the graduates on one last walk through the school to say farewell to friends and teachers who line the hallways. Seniors are given star-shaped papers to write notes of thanks to special "star" teachers who have made a difference in their lives.

"The Walk of Honor serves a two-fold purpose. It is a chance for our graduates to walk the halls one last time, to reminisce and thank teachers who have helped get them to this point, while at the same time letting our staff and students congratulate them for their hard work," said DHS Principal Billye Smith. "But just as importantly, it is an opportunity to give our underclassman a vision for their future that in the next few years this will be them if they stay focused on school."

DHS graduate surprised by special military guest

Navarro graduation military surprise
Ashley Navarro receives a surprise visit from her brother during the graduation ceremony.

Graduation was a little more special for three Dickinson High School graduates this year with help from a special surprise military guest in person and another making a shout-out on video.

DHS graduate Ashley Navarro was surprised when her brother, U.S. Marine Corps. Cpl. Kenneth Navarro ,appeared from behind the stage as she came forward to receive her diploma. He has been serving overseas for much of the past year and is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. Unknown to Ashley, Cpl. Navarro was able to make arrangements to attend her graduation.

Gilbert Alegria, a 2011 DHS graduate and brother of 2014 graduates Cynthia Alegria and Justin Smith, was unable to attend graduation because of his service in the Army Infantry. He is currently stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina but filmed a short shout-out video to the Class of 2014 with special congratulations to his siblings while he was home on leave in December. The video was shown at graduation after Principal Billye Smith asked Class of 2014 graduates entering military service upon graduation to stand and be recognized.

DHS wins Houston Zoo Action for Apes Challenge

Dickinson High School has been named the 2014 winner of the Houston Zoo Action for Apes Challenge. The challenge involved the students collecting old cell phones this past spring semester. The school donating the most phones for recycling won the challenge. The Action for Apes Challenge is a yearly contest hosted by the Houston Zoo to see which school or community organization can recycle the most cell phones by the end of April. By recycling old cell phones with the zoo, participants can help protect animals like chimpanzees and gorillas that live in areas where cell phone materials are mined.

In honor of the achievement, the school will receive a one-of-a-kind painting done by the Houston Zoo's chimpanzee troop in colors chosen by the school.

Seven schools earn HealthierUS School Challenge Award

Seven Dickinson ISD schools were awarded the HealthierUS School Challenge Award. The overall goal of the challenge is to improve the health of school children by promoting a healthier school environment. Five schools received the Gold Award of Distinction. They include Hughes Road Elementary, San Leon Elementary, K.E. Little Elementary, Barber Middle School and Dunbar Middle School. Bay Colony Elementary and Calder Road Elementary both received the Silver Award.

Schools must commit to planning meals that emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains an fat-free or low fat milk. Participation in schools meals must exceed 70 percent for Gold of Distinction Awards and 60 percent for Silver awards. All menus planned to meet the HealthierUS School Challenge requirements exceed the current School Nutrition Program Standards.

Across the United States only 431 schools have received the Gold Award of Distinction, the highest honor at which a school can be certified. For achieving these high standards, each school received plaque, ribbons and a monetary award of $2,000 for Gold of Distinction. Schools earning the second level, the Silver Award, receive $1,000. The award money is used to further teach children about nutrition and promote more physical activity at each school.
