Meet the Dickinson High School National Merit program honorees
Four Dickinson High School seniors were recently recognized through the National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 PSAT/NMSQT Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
From those 1.5 million entrants, approximately 16,000 are named National Merit Semi-Finalists. They have the opportunity to be one of approximately 15,000 to advance in February to a Finalist after completing a detailed scholarship application, writing an essay, having an outstanding academic record and submitting SAT scores. The National Hispanic Recognition Program honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring Hispanic/Latino students from over 250,000 who take the PSAT/NMSQT. |

Dunbar Middle School students give thanks for Lockheed Martin laptop donation
The Dickinson ISD Education Foundation recently accepted a donation from Lockheed Martin Corporation of 20 laptop computers on behalf of the students at Dunbar Middle School. The students at Dunbar were very thankful and excited to see these new laptops and can begin using them right away thanks to the help of Mark Messinger of Lockheed Martin and the Dickinson ISD Technology Department.
This is Lockheed's second donation of laptop computers in 2013 to DISD. The first donation of 20 laptops went to students at McAdams Junior High who have been working with them since last April. The Dickinson ISD Education Foundation and DISD are very appreciative of these laptops, which allow students to learn about technology and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related subjects, as well as access language arts programs.
Pictured above are some of the Dunbar students getting a chance to work on the new laptops. They are, left to right, Mia Terry, Principal Dr. Vonda Washington, teacher Theresa Haak, Armando Rebolloso, Payton Hall and Caleb Driskell. Pictured below at the laptop presentation are, left to right, Travis Hazzard, DISD Technology Specialist; Mark Messinger, Lockheed Martin Corporation IT Programs Manager; Dr. Vonda Washington, Principal; and Dr. Melissa Williams, Director of Information Systems.

Bay Colony third graders become "super heroes"
There were lots of super heroes at Bay Colony Elementary recently as the music and art departments joined forces for a super hero program. The students presented the "Mighty Minds" play, while "Super Hero Me" self-portraits decorated the hallways of the school. Creative writing skills were also practiced with students giving themselves a super hero name and writing a short paragraph and their super powers. Many students and staff members dressed up for the program as super heroes.
