Barber staff supports the troops by donating books

Soldier reading to studentsTroops in Afghanistan will have lots of books to read to their children using books donated by Barber Middle School teachers and staff. The picture books are used by troops in a program developed by Sgt. Stephen Bonett, son of Barber history teacher David Bonett. As a father of a three-year-old, Sgt. Bonett noticed how much he missed reading to his daughter, Victoriya. He has since established a video reading program, allowing troops to read to their children back home and living in army bases abroad. Boxes of children's books are now traveling to army bases throughout Afghanistan. In addition, these books are also being used as a traveling bookmobile for Afghan civilians and military personnel wishing to read English.

Schools honor Veteran's Day with special programs

Parents and grandparents who served or are serving in the United States military were honored this week as part of Veteran's Day programs at several Dickinson ISD campuses. Patriotic music and decorations, video presentations and special recognition of the veterans were just some of the ways students and staff remembered Veteran's Day.
