Weeks, Gove to lead the DHS Class of 2013 as Valedictorian, Salutatorian
When the Dickinson High School Class of 2013 walks across the stage June 6 to receive their diplomas, seniors Faith Weeks and Madison Gove will be leading them as their Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Weeks leads the class with the highest grade point average of 4.72, followed by Gove with a 4.656 average.
Faith Weeks - Valedictorian
Weeks, pictured above in the back, has been a member of the volleyball team for three years. She has been part of the National Honor Society, English Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. Weeks was a part of the Fighting Gator Band for three years and help them win Sweepstakes each year.
Weeks helped with the DHS TRUST (Teens Revealing Unknown Scholastic Talents) program, where mentors give younger student help in their studies and with life in general. The program is in its second year and continues to grow.
Weeks has received a Coca-Cola Scholarship, a Texas A&M Scholarship, a Moody Honors Scholarship, as well as others. After attending Texas A&M University and majoring in Biomedical Science, Weeks hopes to go on to Veterinarian School at Texas A&M. She hopes to one day work with animals as a veterinarian.
Madison Gove - Salutatorian
Gove, pictured above in the front, has competed in debate, rodeo art and other UIL literacy events. She has been a volleyball manager all four years and a member of National Honor Society, English Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society and Business Honors Society.
Even with all that under her belt, the most defining of her accomplishments was when she created the TRUST organization at DHS two years ago. With this group, she gathered more than 30 upperclassmen who wanted to help mold the younger kids into great students. They help with homework, studying for tests and just whatever else a student needs.
Gove has received $93,000 to date in scholarships and plans on attending the University of Texas at Austin. She is majoring in Business Honors and Finance. Her goal is to be able to stay in Austin and make a difference in the Legislature for education. She says her mom is her biggest influence. |
Wal-Mart - Kemah donates 22 bikes
for San Leon top student attendance
All of the students in Christina Alvarado's second grade bilingual class at San Leon Elementary will be starting their summer vacation with a new bike thanks to a generous donation of 22 bikes from the Wal-Mart - Kemah location. Alvarado's class ended the year with the highest student attendance of 97.54 percent, thanks in part to Alvarado's hands-on approach of working with parents, making daily phone calls when students are absent and overall stressing the importance of being in school each day to parents and students.
San Leon aide Maggie Staggs coordinated the donation with Wal-Mart -Kemah, which has worked with the school all year as a Business Partner by providing food donations for some of the school's low-income families, gift certificates for staff and student incentives and more.
Thank you Wal-Mart - Kemah for supporting Dickinson ISD and the students and staff at San Leon Elementary.
