 Celebrating Dickinson ISD Teachers
and Nurses the week of May 6
The week first full week in May is a special time set aside each year by the National Parent Teacher Association to honor teachers. So, sometime during the week of May 6-10 tell a teacher how much they are appreciated. Thank you to all of our 600 teachers who serve more than 9,500 students attending Dickinson ISD schools.
The week of May 6 is also Nurse Appreciation Week. Dickinson ISD has a school nurse on each campus, plus we benefit for the services of a physician assistant through the district's partnership with Christus St. John Hospital in Nassau Bay. The physician assistant is housed at Dickinson High School but her services are available to all Dickinson ISD students. Take a minute this next week to show your appreciation to all of our school nurses. |

Three family members at Dickinson ISD
hold the same Teacher of the Year honor
The Williams family has taken the saying "All in the Family" to a whole new meaning. Amanda Williams, a fifth year teacher at Hughes Road Elementary, was recently named Teacher of the Year at her campus. This is the same honor both her mother, Lisa Williams (2004), and her aunt Jennifer Overton (2001), have held at the same campus.
"This was really exciting for me," Amanda said. "I was shocked about it. I was so surprised, but the fact both my aunt and mother had been named the same hnor just made it so much more exciting for me."
The Williams family has been a part of Dickinson ISD for 15 years. "I got married and my husband was in pharmacy school at the University of Houston, so we moved to Texas from Louisiana," Lisa said. "We loved this area and I taught at Friendswood before coming to Dickinson. Once I got here, there was no better place to be. We love it here."
Lisa taught in the classroom for the majority of her career but now serves as an academic coach at Dunbar Middle School.
Overton, like Amanda, works in the special education department. She explains that her work is not something everyone can do. "These kids work very hard and I think sometimes harder than the rest of the population because when they finally get it, and you see that light bulb go off, you know you have really accomplished something," Overton said.
