DHS Robotics
The DHS Robotics group, the "Gatorzillas," will be headed to the FIRST Robotics Competition Championship the week of April 22 in St. Louis, Missouri after earning the Chairman's Award at the Dallas regional competition in March.
At the regional competition, their robot, "Anubus," performed almost flawlessly, finishing second in the qualifying round and third in the finals due to some technical issues. While only first and second place teams advance to nationals, the "Gatorzillas" were awarded the overall Chairman's Award at the end of the competition, which is the most prestigious award given at the competition and earns them the opportunity to advance to nationals. In addition, the team also received a first place Imagery Award and a second place Safety Award.
Good luck "Gatorzillas!" We are Gator proud!!! |

Barber teacher gets mohawk haircut in honor of history benchmark scores
Some students at Barber Middle School recently had a special incentive to study hard for their third nine weeks history benchmark exam. Teacher David Bonett challenged his students that if 85 percent of them passed their third nine weeks history benchmark, he would return from Spring Break with a mohawk dyed in either pink, purple or Gator blue. His students stayed after school to work on what they needed to learn and studied hard over the weekends. One student missed going to the rodeo because he told his parents he thought he should miss to study. In the end, 85 percent of Bonett's students passed their benchmark exam and by majority vote, he returned to school after Spring Break sporting a freshly cut pink mohawk!

McAdams Math Club donates blankets to terminally ill children in hospitals
The McAdams Junior High Math Club recently donated 24 fleece blankets to Project Linus, which delivers the blankets to terminally ill children in local hospitals. Using fabric donated from math club members and McAdams teachers, the students worked during club meetings and their free time during and after school for weeks. The first batch was dropped off to Project Linus before Spring Break, and the students now plan on making more with the fabric left as well as getting more fabric donated. The next goal is to make simple sewn blankets and quilts. Even though it started with a small goal of 5-10 blankets, the students took it upon themselves to raise the bar and make two dozen. Pictured with the donated blankets are Math Club sponsor Michelle Brown, along with three of her top blanket makers, Math Club members Dinah Rollins, Shelby Easly and Joseph Rodriguez.
