Nguyen places second at State Powerlifting Meet
  
Dickinson High School senior Kenny Nguyen ended his high school powerlifting career with an impressive second place victory at the State Powerliting Meet this past weekend in Abilene.
  
Nguyen competed in the 132 class. He also broke the state bench press record by 20 pounds with a lift of 360 pounds -- three times his body weight.
  
Recognition also goes out to sophomore Cecilio Hernandez, who also qualified for the state meet and placed 13th in the 114 class.
  
The Powerlifting Team is led by Coach Earl Ricicar.
All 10 cafeterias earn Health District Gold Awards

The Galveston County Health District has recognized all 10 Dickinson ISD cafeterias with the Gold Ribbon Award for their exemplary operation of a food service establishment. Cafeteria staff will be recognized at the Health District's annual Gold Ribbon Award ceremony on April 3.
  
The awards were initiated 17 years ago to identify food service establishments that show exemplary compliance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules as enforced by the Galveston County Health District. Recognized establishments demonstrate consistent and cooperative efforts to protect the health and safety of the public they serve.

Student/Teacher holiday March 29
 

Students and teachers will have a holiday on Good Friday, March 29.
The day is listed on the school calendar as a possible Bad Weather Make-Up Day, but since we have not missed any schools days for bad weather this year, it will be a holiday.

Students win top awards in science fairs with a variety of different projects
  
Students throughout Dickinson ISD were busy investigating, researching and experimenting with a variety of different science fair projects this spring semester. And for some junior high and high school students it paid off with big awards at the Galveston County Science and Engineering Fair. Congratulations go out to the following students for their awards at the fair. In addition, click here to see the winners of all the individual campus level fairs.
  
McAdams Junior High students left the Galveston County Science and Engineering Fair with the most awards for the fourth year in a row. Out of the 36 students attending, 23 awards were received. They included:
  
In Behavioral Science, third place went to Evelyn Baecker, while honorable mentions went to Zachary Diamond and Rachel McCall. In Biochemistry/Microbiology, first place was earned by Melanie Sturgeon, second place Maylyn Topfer, third place Jenny Nguyen and honorable mention Sandra Morales. In Botany, third place went to John Herrington and honorable mention to Alia Brown. In Environmental, first place honoree was Cameron Collins. In Zoology, first was Rianna Brown, second Katherine Palmer and honorable mention Bre'anna Woolsey. In Chemistry, second place went to Samuel Parada, while honorable mention honoree was Madeline Grice. In Engineering, Connor Morgan earned first place. In Physics, a third place award went to Leslie Loredo.
  
Specialty awards from the Office of Naval Research were awarded to Loren Gregory and Laura Westerlage. These were special awards with only four awarded for all 200 plus junior high projects. Students who placed first or second in their category were also eligible for division awards. McAdams had four students earn Division Awards, including in Life Science, fourth place Rianna Brown, fifth place Melanie Sturgeon and honorable mention Katherine Palmer; and in Physical Science, third place Connor Morgan.
  
Dickinson High School students also performed very well at the Galveston County far with a total of 47 students in attendance earning 37 awards. They included:
  
For the Ninth Grade Division, in Behavioral and Social Sciences, Kaylee Boudreaux earned first place, Mimi DeLeon third place and Jakob Miller honorable mention. In Biochemistry, second place went to Colby Harbuck and third place to Ryan Kennedy. In Botany, first place honoree was Jose Hotema, second place Brianna Tan, third place Hailey Willard and honorable mention Taylor Sanders and Taylor McDermand. In Environmental Science, second place went to Evan McCarty and third place Christopher Kellagher. In Medical and Health Sciences, Jonico Geraro Eustaquio was an honorable mention winner. In Zoology, Alyssa Smith earned first place followed by Alison Guffey in second place. In Physics, first place went to Michael Harris and second place to Jordan Meyers. Ninth grade divisional awards went to third place Evan McCarty, fourth place Alyssa Smith and honorable mention Michael Harris.
  
For the 10th-12th Grade Division, in Behavioral and Social Science, Azeret Palacios earned second place and Anna Novak honorable mention. In Botany, Emilio Marquez placed second. In Environmental Science, honorable mention went to Samantha Bullock. In Medical and Health Science, Kyla Maxton was first place while Ewere Azagidi earned honorable mention. In Zoology, second place went to Jared Dornak and third place to Briege Penaranda. In Chemistry, third place was Matthew Huvar, with honorable mentions to Ebube Okeke and Lauren Caldwell. In Engineering, Katherine Bourland received honorable mention. In Physics, third place went to Stephen Romero. A Top Divisional Award was received by Azeret Palacios with honorable mention.

Deats donates $1,400 to Foundation from book proceeds
 

Ernie Deats donation Ernie Deats recently donated $1,400 to the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation Scholarship Fund from the first installment of proceeds from the sale of his latest book, "The Legend of Marcus Benson." He has been donating on a regular basis to the Foundation's scholarship fund to ensure that as many Dickinson High School seniors as possible can receive a scholarship to attend college. The Foundation appreciates his work and all that he does to help the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation.

 

Take the wheel and help your school at Drive 4 UR School

 

Drive 4 UR School logo In cooperation with Ford Motor Company and local Dickinson dealer McRee Ford, the Drive 4 UR School event is planned for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, April 12 in the Sam Vitanza Stadium parking lot to benefit the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation. Anyone 18 or older with a valid driver's license and valid auto insurance is invited to test drive a Ford vehicle for free.

 

Ford Motor Company will donate $20 (up to a maximum of $6,000) to the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation for each test drive taken. There is a limit of one test drive donation per household. For more information, call the Foundation office at 281-229-6088.

 

Foundation's Academic Recognition Gala set for May 14

 

As the school year begins to wrap up, the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation is planning to honor a variety of students, teachers and donors at the Sixth Annual Seeds of Excellence Academic Recognition Gala. Planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 at South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center, the gala is an opportunity to spotlight the top 20 graduating seniors from Dickinson High School and their distinguished teachers, the district's teachers and principal of the year, Education Foundation grant honorees, as well as all the donors that have supported the Foundation this school year.

 

The Foundation has gala sponsorship opportunities available. The deadline is April 26. Individual tickets or a table of 10 can also be reserved by May 2. Individual tickets are $40 per person or a table of 10 can be reserved for $500. Call 281-229-6088 for more information.
