Awesome ambassadors for DISD...
  
We are starting a new section in "Gator Bytes" to give kudos to our employees who refer new teachers or other employees to our district.
  
This week, special recognition goes out to Jennifer Reed, a third grade teacher at Calder Road Elementary. She referred Shelley Shaw, who will be coming to Dickinson ISD as a new teacher for 2013-2014.

Dickinson ISD schools closed for
Spring Break holiday March 11-15
  
Dickinson ISD schools and offices will be closed the week of March 11-15 for the Spring Break holiday. Students and staff will return on Monday, March 18.
  
Also, a quick reminder that Daylight Savings Time begins at 2 a.m. this Sunday, March 10. Remember to "Spring Forward" before going to bed Saturday night by setting your clocks ahead one hour.

Dr. Williams throws out first pitch
at DHS varsity baseball game

Dr. Leland Williams attended the Dickinson High School Varsity Baseball tournament game on Thursday to throw out the first pitch and take some pictures. The DHS Baseball Field and Ag Science Center were recently named in his honor.

Dickinson ISD has many things to be excited about, with top-notch facilities and students throughout the district excelling in academics, fine arts and athletics. Here are just a few reasons to be Dickinson ISD proud for student achievements over the past month. Go GATORS!
  

MJHS Band...

The McAdams Junior High Band members participated in their annual Solo and Ensemble Contest in February. A total of 130 students received a Division I on a solo, while 33 ensembles earned Division I. At the conclusion of the contest, the judges selected students whose performance they considered "Outstanding" and presented them with a large neck medallion for their outstanding performance. The 20 McAdams students receiving this honor were:

Concert Band: Isabel Cayetano and Haley Larsen

Symphonic Band: Diego Duran and Gabrielle Amaya

Honors Band: Allister Azagidi, Gerson Reyes, Cameron Collin, Melody Stout, Nicholaus Peel, Joseph Rodriguez, Jackie Castillo, Kelci Bellard, Ozioma Okeke, Gwen Chevillard, Carlos Castro, Trint Lopez, Edgar Rivera, Adley Monterosso, Esteban Ganem and Harold Love.

 

MJHS Drama...

The McAdams Junior High One-Act Play students competed in the Texas City UIL One-Act Play contest in February against five other area schools and were awarded third place overall. Special awards were received by four students, including Sam Brown with all-star cast, Gaybria Rhoads and Ciara Compton with honorable mention all-star cast and Izayah McCardell with the technical award and best lighting technician. Other one-act play members were Colton Powers, Connor Morgan, William Hughes, Cloe Auchly, Braylon Jones, Alia Brown, Sienna Floyd, Bailey Grasso, Catherine Romero, Wesley Batiste, Ambree Feaster, Jake Wadkins, Kane Rimpler, Ivan Figueroa, Cathy Davis, Evelyn Baecker, Austin Swann and Jordan Matkin.

 

MJHS Spelling Bee...

Congratulations to first place honoree Saleemah Thomas and second place winner Melanie Sturgeon for their accomplishments in the McAdams Junior High Spelling Bee.

 

Daughters of the Republic of Texas Essay Contest...

Congratulations go out to two McAdams Junior High seventh grade Gifted and Talented History students, who earned honors in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas local essay contest. First place went to John Herrington and third place was awarded to Adam Funderburg. These student's essays will now move on to the district level.

 
DHS Regional Swimming...

The Dickinson High School Swimming Team had several students earn awards at the Regional Competition in February. Koletin Schroeder competed in diving and placed fourth. David Harris made the finals in both of his events, placing eighth in the 200 freestyle and first in the 100 butterfly. He advanced to state for the butterfly where he earned 15th place in the state competition. He also set a new school record in the butterfly. Lilly Araujo also made finals for both of her events, placing second in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke. She set school records in both and swam her personal best time in the backstroke. The relay team of Ryan Kirk, Jared Dornak, Colby Harbuck and David Harris swam in the preliminary competition but did not qualify for finals.

 

DHS Skills USA...

Several Dickinson High School students earned awards in the Skills USA Competition in Feburary. In Cosmetology, Taylor Henderson, Ngoc Nguyen, Evelyn Mayorga, Yasmin Gomez and Arely Perez earned first place in the Cosmetology Quiz Bowl Team competition. Aubrey Fluellen earned first place in Esthetics, while Veronica Angeles earned first place in Nail Art. In Women's Haircutting/Up Do, Anna Ramirez was awarded second place followed by Maria Gutierrez in third place. 

 

In Welding Sculpture, Emmett Hussey earned first place, followed by Dustin Walker in second, Tyler Moore-Wilson in third, Dillon Priddy in fourth and Juan Mayorga in fifth. In Three-Person Fabrication Team, Allen McKinney, Bruno Alvarado and Dillon Priddy scored a first place award. In Job Skill Demonstration A, Dillon Priddy earned fourth place. In Job Skills Demonstration Open, first place went to Taylor Webb. Allen McKinney, Bruno Alvarado and Chey Gonzales earned Best of Show for Welding Project Furniture.

 

Most of these students will now advance to the State Skills USA Competition April 4-6 in Corpus Christi.

  

DHS Choir...

In February, some of the Dickinson High School Choir students competed in UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest, where each student performs one classical piece and receives a rating of 1-5. Six students received a Superior rating of "1" and will advance to the All-State Solo and Ensemble Contest in May. They included Marcus Bell, Brianna Bell, Robyn Reichle, Samantha Jaramillo, Dallas Ware and Nicole Fredericksen. Also receiving an Excellent rating of "2" was Cole Turner.
