Conrad Gonzales, Jr. is featured artist on 2012 Dickinson ISD Christmas Card
"Have a Chompin' Good Christmas" is Big Al's wish for you this holiday season as featured on the front of the 2012 Dickinson ISD Christmas Card mailed out earlier this month.
Conrad Gonzales, Jr., a fourth grade student at Bay Colony Elementary, had his artwork chosen to spotlight on the card's front cover. He drew a cheerful, happy gator with a reindeer looking on in the background. The district revived the district Christmas card this year and opened up the cover art design to the district's elementary students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade. The contest will be open to the district's secondary school students next year. The art teachers at the six elementary campuses send in their best 10-20 entries and a group of employees in the Education Support Center judged the cards and selected the winning design.
Conrad is taught by Bay Colony art teacher Kimi White, who also had her students submit possible greeting to include on the card. "Have a Chompin' Good Christmas" was one that fit well with Conrad's design.

DHS National Art Honor Society provides
centerpieces for Military Academies Ball
In its second year, the Dickinson High School National Art Honor Society is making 100 exquisitely beaded holiday Christmas trees that will be the table centerpieces for the 27th Annual Joint Academies Military Ball.
The ball takes place December 26 at Moody Gardens and will host the United States Naval Academy, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy and the Coast Guard Academy.
"This is something we have done the last two years," sponsor Colleen Steblein said. "This is a great way for us to give back to the military and help out a great cause. Every year around the country, these events are given in honor of our cadets and midshipmen who are training to serve as military officers of the next decade."
The NAHS has 59 members. They are making the trees out of recycled materials such as newspaper, cardboard and most notably, Mardi Gras beads. "We have been having so much fun with this," NAHS President Madison Gove said. All of these trees are made from scratch and they have different styles and personalities to them. They are each unique in every way."
The students used about 400 pounds of beads and 100 pounds of newspaper to create the trees. The unique part is that it keeps the materials out of the trash and repurposes them into art. Steblein said donations of Mardi Gras beads are always appreciated because it is a favorite project of the art students at DHS.
Dickinson High School currently has two former students attending academies, including Race Southworth at the Air Force Academy and Mark Steblein at the Naval Academy. Bo Snelson, the son of Mandy and John Snelson, head football coach and athletic director for Dickinson ISD, is also at the Naval Academy.
Steblein said the NAHS is very proud to support all branches of the military with their artistic talent and plan to do more projects, including Valentine boxes for midshipmen in the future.

The Delta Eta Lamda Chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society from Dickinson High School recently helped honor fallen soldiers, by placing a wreath on all 59,000 grave sites at the Houston National Cemetery, joining more than 8,000 sites across the nation.
The Wreaths Across America story began over 15 years ago when Worcester Wreath Company, located in Maine, began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of our nation's fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery. Over the years, the company has donated over 75,000 wreaths which were placed by volunteers in a wreath laying ceremony each December.
