A message from Superintendent Vicki Mims on school safety in Dickinson ISD
The senseless tragedy that occurred recently at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut makes us all realize how precious our children, our school families, and our lives are and how quickly those precious things can be taken from us. Our deepest sympathy is with the entire Newtown community during this time.
I want to assure you that our district takes the safety of our students and employees very seriously. We have a variety of different security measures in place and have an excellent working relationship with the Galveston County Sheriff's Department through our police liaison program to provide police presence throughout the district.
In light of the recent events in Connecticut, our police liaison officers and central office administrators are making extra rounds this week throughout the district, especially at arrival and dismissal times. With the help of our police liaison officers we are also visiting with each campus principal individually to review safety plans. As always, our visitor management system is in place to have all campus visitors enter only through the school office and present identification to enter the building.
If students are especially troubled or concerned about the Connecticut events, we have trained campus counselors and other personnel on each campus who are able to provide support for them. Our principals and central office administration are also available should you have concerns.

Dickinson High mentoring program provides support for struggling students

Dickinson High School TRUST Mentors
When it comes to helping others this holiday season, some students at Dickinson High School know the true meaning of giving. Not only are they giving of themselves but they are giving of their time to make better, more productive students throughout the campus.
The group is known as TRUST, which stands for Teams Revealing Unknown Scholastic Talent. It is a mentoring group where Gifted and Talented (GT) students work with other students on their schoolwork, while at the same time encouraging them to do better.
The brainchild of the group is Madison Gove, a senior student who saw that her class enrollment seemed to be dropping. That prompted her and a friend to take action back in January.
"We wanted to figure out what we could do to fix the problem of our class losing numbers and kids dropping out," Gove said. "I got together with several other students who we thought would make good mentors and felt like this would be a way to help kids who really needed it. We have so many kids on this campus who are great and have one or two subjects that they do very well, but then some subjects like math and science where they need help."
