In the Spotlight...
Communities in Schools and K.E. Little Elementary partnered together last week to sponsor their school's first "Bingo for Books" night. More than 250 students and parents joined teachers and volunteers to play bingo and winners went home with a book. All students went home with more than one book for winning and participating. Special thanks to all the volunteers and Chick-Fil-A in League City and the Assistance League for donations of the books and refreshments.

Visit the DISD Curriculum Website

There is a great parent resource on the Dickinson ISD website with everything you need to stay informed about the school curriculum at each grade level.

Parents and community members are invited to explore our curriculum documents. There are several different documents on the website to help students and parents check student progress and also look ahead to what students will study later in the year or in future years.

Here is the link directly to the Curriculum area:

U of H softball players bring motivational message to Bay Colony students

Three University of Houston softball players visited Bay Colony Elementary before Thanksgiving break to talk to the students about staying in school, making good grades and having a good attitude. They asked the students questions, did cheers and pitched the ball a few times. As an added bonus, one of the players, Holly Anderson, is a DHS Gator graduate who is now a senior at U of H. She was joined by fellow softball players Summer Groholski from Grapeland and Jennifer Hooker from Katy.

DHS Congressional Debate Team invited to Texas State Capitol competition

The Dickinson High School Congressional Debate Team members were in Austin last week to participate in a debate competition at the Texas State Capitol. They were nine of only 150 students from across Texas invited to participate in the competition. The opportunity to compete against past national champion winners allowed them to learn a lot of
valuable information.

In addition, DHS Debate Coach Cheri Van Sant arranged an hour-long meeting with Representative Bill Callegari from Katy, who authored House Bill 85 to limit the end of course testing. The students had done extensive research on the bill so the meeting with the representative who authored it was invaluable for the students.

The nine DHS debaters attending the competition are pictured below at the Texas State Capitol. They include Matthew Huvar, Gabby Bernal, Chris Trautman, Angelica Ramirez, Madison Gove, Connor Ard, Marshall Kettler, Anna Novak and Evan Snyder.

DHS Law Enforcement Club presents Protect a Child program at K.E. Little

DHS Law Enforcement Club The Dickinson High School Law Enforcement Club visited K.E. Little Elementary recently to present the Protect a Child program that the club students built, named and implemented.

The Law Enforcement Club students went to the kindergarten and first grade classrooms and were able to do fingerprinting and take saliva DNA samples in a kit. These kits were all personalized with the student's personal information and picture. The kits were sent home with the students so that parents have them to provide to law enforcement with essential information about the students in case their child is ever missing. The students were able to provide kits to 200 students through fundraising and a grant from the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation.

The club students also put together "activity packets" regarding law enforcement and personal safety. The DHS Law Enforcement Club would like to continue the program by taking it to different elementary schools in future years. The club is led by President Gabriella Salas and Vice President Glen Davenport. Teacher sponsor is DHS Criminal Justice Instructor Jenna Lussier.
