DHS Gator Band earns 18th place out of 38 bands participating at state contest
The Dickinson High School Gator Band had a good showing at their first UIL 5A State Marching Competition, ranking 18th out of 38 bands participating in the contest. They ranked higher than all but one band from our region in the Houston/Galveston area. The Dickinson community was very supportive of the band as they headed to San Antonio Monday afternoon for the state contest with students, parents and community members lining FM 517 to cheer them on. Congratulations to the Gator Band for their great performances this year and for representing Dickinson ISD and the Dickinson community at the state level.

Food and Nutrition Services earns Excellence in Texas School Health award
The Dickinson ISD Food and Nutrition Department has been recognized with an Award for Excellence in Texas School Health - Reaching for Excellence Award, sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services School Health Program.
The award is presented to school districts or schools that are in the planning stages for a new program to improve the lifelong health of students, staff and the school community. Food and Nutrition Services will be using the $1,200 award to implement a program called, "Herbs for Healthy Kids." The program will involve growing an on-site herb garden and using the herbs to change the seasoning methods for all scratch foods made in Dickinson ISD cafeterias.
As part of new USDA regulations, schools must reduce the sodium level in current recipes to help with diseases now being identified in children such as high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. The on-site herb garden will be a demonstration site to teach the use of herbs as a substitute for salt in recipes. In addition, the department plans to teach students how to cook at home using fresh herbs by hosting a Culinary Camp for students in the summer.
