Become a "Reading Buddy" to an elementary student 

The Dickinson ISD CHAMPS Program is currently signing up community volunteers to be "reading buddies" to an elementary student. The program is available at Bay Colony, Calder Road, Hughes Road, K.E. Little and Silbernagel Elementary Schools.

Congratulations to Jennifer Trejo, a third grade student at San Leon Elementary, for earning Third Place in Division I at the state level in the School Bus Safety Poster Contest.

She is taught by San Leon art teacher Elise Roach.
DHS Gator Marching Band advancing  
to UIL Area competition Saturday 

On to Area competition! The Dickinson High School Gator Marching Band will compete at the UIL Area Marching Competition this Saturday after receiving straight "Division 1" ratings at the Region competition held Tuesday night at Dickinson ISD's own Sam Vitanza Stadium.

The community is invited to join a group of band parents who will meet in the Shipley's Donut store parking lot at the corner of FM 517 and I-45 at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to cheer on the band as they leave Dickinson. The DHS Band is set to perform at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 27 at the Galena Park Athletic Stadium, 15025 Wallisville Road where 35 bands from four different regions will compete. The entry fee is $3.

Ten of the 35 bands competing Saturday will be chosen to advance to the finals competition starting at 8 p.m. and then at the end of the night seven of the 10 will earn the chance to move on to the UIL 5A State Marching Competition to be held Tuesday, November 6 in San Antonio.

"Proud to be Drug Free"
Students celebrate Red Ribbon Week
with ribbons and special theme days  

Firefighter Red Ribbon Week Throughout Dickinson ISD, students and staff were "Proud to be Drug Free" this week as the district honored Red Ribbon Week. Special theme days with drug free slogans and students wearing sunglasses, flip flops, college shirts, hats, red shirts and more all highlighted the week at school's throughout the district. Students and staff each received a red "Proud to be Drug Free" ribbon, compliments of Maxim Insurance, to wear during the week.

School assemblies with speakers from the Bay Area Resource Center and DePelchin Children's Center were held at several campuses. A Hero Day was also held at Bay Colony Elementary with firemen, EMS, police and military invited to greet students as they came to school.

Target - League City donates boxes
of school supplies to Dickinson ISD students


Target school supply donation A special thank you to the Target in League City for donating a dozen large boxes full of school supplies. Vanessa Guzman, a Dickinson ISD parent and a Target employee, helped coordinate the donation. Chad Cleveland and Joey Ramirez from the Dickinson ISD Operations and Facilities Department are shown loading up the boxes full of spiral notebooks, binders, pocket folders and notebook paper. The supplies will go a long way in helping DISD students! Thank you Target League City and Vanessa Guzman for supporting Dickinson ISD students and staff. 
In the Spotlight...

DHS Cross Country
Congratulations to the Dickinson High School Cross Country runners, which finished as runner-up in varsity boys, junior varsity boys and junior varsity girls at the St. John's Rebel Invitational Meeting in Houston recently. Daniel Ramirez and Emilio Marquez finished first and second in the varsity boys division. Amber Rivera finished 11th in the varsity girls. Erik Trejo finished 6th, Tyreq Miles in 8th and Jovanni Avila in 10th in the junior varsity boys division. In the junior varsity girls division, Dulce Trejo finished 10th, Samantha Servin 13th and Melanie Chavarria 15th. Good luck to all the DHS cross country runners who will be competing in the District 24-5A meet this Friday, October 26.

DHS Swimming 
Congratulations to the Dickinson High School Swimming Team, which placed fifth overall, at a meet recently in Angleton. Individual honors went to Lilly Araujo, 5th place, and David Harris, 8th place. Lilly, who is only a freshman, has already set four new school records. Congratulations to all the swimmers on their accomplishment!
