Bella, previously Lynda, was adopted in July 2012.  Her new family recently shared this email.

"We wanted to give you an update on one of your furry friends.  As you may remember, she came from Oklahoma where she was found stray with her sister (Charla).  Bella was scared of her own shadow.  We're happy to report she has made great strides.  We worked with a trainer and behaviorist in our home, before we could socialize Bella at a  regular obedience class at our local park district.  She is not as afraid of other dogs and people, but still a bit shy."

"She is one happy and spoiled pooch.  We are fortunate we adopted Bella, or should we say, she adopted us! "

Congratulations Bella on finding your forever home with the White Family!

2nd Graders Raise $2,600 for NAHS!

Fabulous Fundraisers

As a Leadership/Giving Without Walls project, a Chesterbrook Academy Elementary 2nd grade classroom organized a fundraiser to benefit the animals at NAHS.  In the classroom, the 15 students studied the NAHS website to learn about our mission and the reason to support our cause.  Each student chose an animal available for adoption to advocate for then wrote narratives and drew pictures about that pet.

The students promoted their project to the rest of the school's students to inspire them to participate in a walk-a-thon.  They encouraged everyone to collect pledges from family and friends that would be donated to NAHS after the completion of the 1-mile walk.

On May 10, 2013, the student body, joined by NAHS Paws for Tales reading program volunteer and dog teams, gathered at 9:00 a.m. to kick off the walk.  Everyone enjoyed a celebration afterward.

The following week the 2nd grade classroom that organized the fundraiser visited the shelter to have a private, behind the scenes tour.  They presented NAHS with their donation of $2,600!  These students are truly inspiring and demonstrate how everyone, regardless of age, can make a profound difference in this world!

Paws for Tales Creates Special Bonds
Gail & Bozeman

As school is winding down, so are the Paws for Tales reading program visits. This innovative reading program is available to any school and offers students the opportunity to practice their reading skills by reading to a dog. In this non-judgmental environment, students' reading skills can flourish and a close bond is often formed between the kids, the Paws for Tales dog and the NAHS volunteer, so saying goodbye for the summer is special.

At Elmwood Elementary, a student brought their Paws for Tales dog, Bozeman, pigs ears, a frisbee and homemade dog cookies. Another student wrote a special note to NAHS volunteer, Gail Banning, that brought tears to her eyes as he showed off his improved skills by reading it aloud.

Over at Beebe Elementary, each student eagerly walked their Paws for Tales dog, Sonoma, around the room one last time. NAHS volunteer, Renee Hicks, handed out gifts from Sonoma, and each student in return presented her with a handmade flower bouquet and a picture of themselves with a handwritten thank you note on the back. The kids all hugged Sonoma and said they couldn't wait to see him next year!

The Paws for Tales reading program is a wonderful learning opportunity for students and a very rewarding experience for the NAHS volunteer and dog teams. And after a summer of fun, they will all get to see each other again in the fall and continue to improve their reading skills.
