FALL AERATION

As you may have already seen, aeration has begun. Thank you for your patience as we complete this fall maintenance project.

Langara Golf Course has been aerated and reduced rates are applicable.

Fraserview Golf Course will be closed at 2pm on Sunday Sept 25th and all day on Sept 26th and Sept 27th.

McCleery Golf Course will be closed at 1pm on Sunday Oct 2nd and all day Oct 3rd.

Aeration is weather dependent so the above dates could be changed or extended if the weather does not cooperate. Please call the golf shops for more information and green fee rates.

WHY WE DO AERATION

Let's face it; no one likes aeration. You don't, we don't and believe it or not, even golf course superintendents could do without this tedious and stressful process if they could. But preventative maintenance is an integral part of successful golf course management.

Aerification (also known as aeration) achieves three important objectives. It relieves soil compaction, it provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green's roots and it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch.

Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin deep. In fact, the condition of a green has a lot to do with what goes on below the surface. In order for grass to grow at 3/16-inch, it must have deep, healthy roots. Good roots demand oxygen. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. Without oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die.

Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. Hard, fast, true rolling greens require regular aeration, verticutting, sanding, mowing, fertilizing, slicing and rolling.

There are many types of aerifying machines with different attachments that address different problems in the various stages of the life of a green. So the next time you're ready to scream when the aerifiers are brought on the course, remember that a little preventative maintenance produces the best greens over the long haul.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIPS

This was the first season that Fraserview, McCleery and Langara have offered a Junior Membership Program. The program was designed to build on our already strong junior lesson programs and give juniors more access to our golf courses.

The junior membership launched on June 1st and we had 17 junior members join this year. The juniors could play at all three Championship golf courses and to date more than 200 rounds of golf have been played by these 17 golfers.

We are committed to growing junior golf in Vancouver and will be continuing the junior membership program in 2017. The 2017 program will launch on April 1st. If you know any junior golfers who will be interested please make sure to watch for details or add them to our email list.

LAST CHANCE TO GIVE US YOUR MONTHLY FEEDBACK

Our monthly survey will be closing for the season on October 11th. Please take the time before then to tell us how we can make your golf experience with us even better. Each person who fills out the survey is entered to win a FREE round of golf.

We thank everyone who has taken the time to share their opinions with us during the 2016 golf season. We take all of the feedback very seriously and are always striving to improve the experience of our guests.

We will be sending out a more detailed Year End Survey in November. We will use these responses as part of our winter planning process to bring you a terrific 2017!

2016 PREFERRED PLAYER PROGRAM

Our new Preferred Player Program was launched at the Vancouver Golf & Travel Show in February 2016. To date members of the program have played over 7,000 rounds of golf. More than 1,500 loyalty program members have received a 50% off round and 250 have received a free round of golf.

There will be at least six golfers who will be playing free golf this winter. They have played over 65 rounds at Fraserview, McCleery and Langara combined. Congratulations!

This year's Preferred Player Program runs until December 31st so you still have time to earn points and use rewards. Watch for 2017 details coming soon.
