COURSE UPDATE - LANGARA GOLF COURSE

Now that we are in full summer swing, I think it is a good time to talk about the importance of timely irrigation. Whether it be from Mother Nature or our aging automated irrigation systems.

In April, as a region it looked like we were in for another very hot and dry spring leading into summer. As May came around we were in relief and our watering programs were decreased. For those of you who play golf, you will be familiar with the term firm and fast. And the only way to give our golfers this type of golfing experience is by having a dialed in irrigation system or, as this year has gone, some very timely rains.

This average rain fall season has allowed the Superintendents to back off (for the most part) in terms of the frequency of nightly irrigation programs, ultimately achieving optimum playing conditions even with our outdated irrigation systems.

When Mother Nature steps in it gives us the advantage of a more uniform growing pattern that shows consistent growth from tee to green. In times of heat stress the only way to achieve these conditions is to have a very efficient up to date irrigation system. When you are watching a PGA tournament on T.V. the amount of effort and technology that goes into these systems is unparalleled from technology of the past.

So hopefully next time you are out playing golf in late August and are impressed with the condition at our courses, know that the chances are Mother Nature had something to do with it.

FRASERVIEW GOLF ACADEMY

This year we have seen a record number of junior aged golfers attend academy programs. And the success in skill development has been extremely positive. From the Canada-wide CN Skills Challenge Event in the spring to over-subscribed summer camps and seasonal programs for new to elite level golfers, we have seen our students finish among the leaders in several age divisions.

Children aged 4 and a half or older are welcomed into programs as an early start in golf is proven to help develop proper life-long habits. At the higher skill level, our Elite and Girls Club players are competing in local tournaments and playing regularly at Vancouver Parks Board courses where scoring and etiquette skills are being honed. Fraserview Golf Academy juniors are winning at the junior linksters level, scoring hole in ones at par 3 courses and competing among the top juniors in the province.

The rapid growth in the popularity and success of junior golf at Fraserview is due mainly to a renewed commitment to high quality instruction programs by Tom Monaghan (Head Professional) and Derek Thornley (Director of Instruction). Junior and adult development programs are available to the public in alignment with Vancouver Parks Board's vision for attracting new golfers to the game.

More information on up coming after school junior golf programs is available by contacting the Fraserview Golf Shop at 604-257-6923.
