LANGARA HITTING BAYS COMING SOON!

Many of you have seen the construction work underway to install warm up hitting bays at Langara. This project will be complete at the end of August and the bays will officially open on August 25th.

There will be four hitting bays each complete with brand new mat, bag stand and bench. The bays will be open for use during golf course hours. Please bring your own balls.

We also have a new Starter Hut at Langara. Check it out as you head to the 1st tee.

COURSE UPDATE - McCLEERY GOLF COURSE

With the perfect combination of moisture and heat, July provided perfect conditions for turf growth. Normally as turf managers we would welcome this however, maintaining consistent rough heights becomes very challenging. Keeping up with mowing over 30 acres of rough at McCleery takes about 2.5 to 3 days to complete and with the growth rates we had this early summer, well you guessed it, long, thick rough prevailed. Adding to the challenge, we also had some untimely equipment breakdowns.

So as last year was firm and fast with the drought, this year was back to west coast golf!

On a different note, please try to apply insect repellants on the asphalt or an area in the rough. As you can see from the picture below, insect repellant can be phytotoxic to the greens. Note the perfect footprint where this person applied repellant on a green.

Continuing on the theme of course etiquette, please try to apply the following best practices to your round:
  • Keep all motorized carts away from the greens and tees, and especially steep slopes.
  • Repair your ball mark and one other.
  • Take the time to properly rake and smooth the bunker...everyone has been in a foot print before, not fun!
  • Play ready golf to do your part in setting a good pace of play.
  • Engage your Player's Assistant; they are a great asset to help you enjoy your round.
Lastly, have a great remainder to your summer and enjoy all the natural beauty and wildlife here at McCleery!

CANADA DAY HOLE IN ONE

Congratulations to Leigh Spencer for his Canada Day hole-in-one on #13 at Fraserview Golf Course. Leigh recently picked up his custom hole-in-one flag from Fraserview Golf Operations Manager, Andrew Johnson.

If you happen to get a hole-in-one at Fraserview or Langara, please ask the Golf Shop about purchasing a custom flag to commemorate the special moment. A complimentary hole-in-one certificate is also available at all three Vancouver Parks Golf courses.

INNER CITY YOUTH PROGRAM AT McCLEERY

McCleery Golf Course's Inner City Youth Program is now in its 18th year.

This program was developed to introduce the game of golf to children living in Canada's poorest neighborhood, the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

Muncie Booth became the Head Golf Professional at Langara Golf Course in 1991 and McCleery Golf Course in 1998. He started the Inner City Youth golf program in 1999 to bring golf to children of the downtown Eastside. To get started in 1999 Muncie recruited the assistance of three Community Centers in the downtown Eastside area - Strathcona, Thunderbird, and Ray-Cam. The first year had its challenges, namely raising the $7,000 needed for buses and drivers, PGA of Canada Professionals, hot meals, snacks and refreshments, printed materials, prizes, gifts and trophies.

Rhubarb is growing abundantly so Chef Mark has been working on some creative recipes to use it. Try this Rhubarb Mustard at home to give your BBQ at new twist.

Rhubarb Mustard

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 cups rhubarb
  • 1 cup Grainy Dijon mustard- or your favorite mustard
Preparation:
  1. Clean the rhubarb. Make sure to discard the leaves. Slice the rhubarb in 1 inch chunks.
  2.  In a medium sauce pan, bring the water and sugar to a boil.
  3. Add the rhubarb and cook until the rhubarb has become soft.
  4. Cook for 3-5 minutes to reduce.
  5. Add the mustard to the rhubarb and mix.
  6. Cook the rhubarb mustard mixture for about 2-5 minutes.
Rhubarb mustard is great with fish, pork and chicken. It works well with braised meats as well. Spread it around and enjoy!
