Enjoy a few snapshots from the summer ... and make plans now to join us this Fall for more events.

"It was great to be a part of "The Philosopher's Table" discussion last weekend. Hearing you speak was a breath of fresh air ... Thank you for being such a gifted teacher, Marietta. Thank you for being my teacher. Thank you for changing my life for the better. Your work touched my life in a lasting way and I will forever be thankful that life placed you in my path. It's been close to twenty years since I sat in your classrooms, Marietta, yet I vividly remember your passion for teaching philosophy to third grade children and your thoughts on how the education system needs a philosophical overhaul. It has been a joy to watch your success from afar ..."    Read more.

BLOG | From The Philosopher's Desk

We considered the truth about education and success together. In The Philosopher's Table I write: "The root of education suggests a process of bringing forward, leading up, drawing out. I picture individuals climbing a steep hill together, teachers and students in spry pursuit of knowledge. The word conveys positive images, this movement forward, up, and out so we can stand on higher ground." We took off from this small start. I asked that they think back on a powerful learning experience in their lives, in or out of the classroom, what they learned and why it remains memorable. Interestingly, one common theme emerged: failure taught marvelous lessons. Not knowing knocks on the door of knowledge. Loss gives birth to victory. As the school year plays out, thoughts hopefully will return to the meaning of teacher, of student, of education. It must have been hard for my father to dash my eight-year-old dreams, his voice quivery as he assured me that I would not grow up to play second base for the Yankees. He replaced (or tried) my bat and glove with a tennis racquet, and we set out together to hit another kind of ball. But I still have my glove just in case. I'm a baseball fan. FROM THE BLOGOSPHERE  |  My Clean Kitchen
"Back in February I met a local Virginia author named Marietta McCarty. I was invited by a friend to an event she was doing for her new book called "The Philosopher's Table: How to Start Your Philosophy Dinner Club - Monthly Conversation, Music, and Recipes." Marietta is a philosopher, professor, author, and so much more. I had the pleasure of attending another event this past weekend and I'm so glad I did. Marietta has a warm personality that I can only describe as glowing. That glowing personality comes alive in her books. I've now read all three! When reading this particular book, "The Philosopher's Table," you'll be quickly drawn into her world as she relates stories of her own experiences, mingling them with people she's met, loved ones, children she's philosophized with, and even well known philosophers."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR | Meet Marietta McCarty

Marietta McCarty is the author of bestseller
Little Big Minds: Sharing Philosophy with Kids, Nautilus Award winner
How Philosophy Can Save Your Life: 10 Ideas That Matter Most, and
The Philosopher's Table: How to Start Your Philosophy Dinner Club-Monthly Conversation, Music, and Recipes.

Marietta enjoyed lively philosophy circles among her college students at Piedmont Virginia Community College for twenty-eight years before setting off on her career as an author. Her books lead her into new circles of fledgling philosophers of all ages-on playgrounds, in dining rooms, through back doors into kitchens, through front doors into libraries and restaurants, at business meetings and after-work parties.

"Wish I could have been enrolled in one of your Philosophy Classes before you left to embark on your career as an Author. The first page of your book,"How Philosophy Can Save Your Life" contained a lesson ... The Importance of Asking Good Questions ... that I finally learned during the latter part of my career as an Urban Planner."
