SUMMER 2014 |  Author and Philosopher Marietta McCarty

MARIETTA'S NOTEBOOK Welcome to Brazil
"A huge thank you to our hosts Julie and Colin for a lively and delicious evening ... and of course to Marietta who dreamed it possible. May the dishes be done and the hosts at rest. We so enjoyed our time with you all."

The Philosopher's Table Comes to Life

What a feeling. I watched as The Philosopher's Table turned into a movie! Hostess Julie and Able Assistant Colin prepared to perfection the dishes for the chapter titled "Liberating Education." 11 philosophizing diners traveled on June 20 to Brazil, the setting for this month and topic (and for a major sports event these days!).

Here you'll see Fish Tacos with a zesty jicama mixture accompaniment - Colin grilled cod to perfection and the tortillas toasted on dying embers. Black Bean Salad (while it lasted!) complemented the tacos. The Coconut Bread Pudding with Dark Rum Sauce stopped all conversation. Salsa and Avocado dip greeted guests, with an enticing offer to try Brazil's signature drink, a caipirinha.

You'll notice all the special touches - fresh flowers, bright lanterns, and a canine philosopher.
The conversation would have delighted the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire featured in the chapter: describe a powerful learning experience that occurred outside the classroom.

As the author, a diner, and a participant, the evening was a dream come true. I'm stuffed with gratitude.

Then, in 1993, Maya Angelou stole Michael Jordan's star power. I happily picture the young philosophers as they watched rebroadcasts of her reciting her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the Clinton Inauguration-their eyes wide, bodies completely still, posture growing more erect, big smiles when she included "children" in her invitation to a new day. A rocking celebrity poet! Dr. Angelou was the cool one now. I repeatedly used her poem to discuss the concept of Justice with them and I also suggest an activity based on it in Little Big Minds. Quite a delight it was to witness the children's first tiptoes into poetry-from Virginia to Chicago to California. Hersch finds much to admire in Whitman's work and spirit, and he composes a score to match Whitman's "Song of the Universal" as well as excerpts from "Song of Myself." What a thrill, imagining the union of "myself" and the "universal," a union deeply felt by Whitman and intimately scored by Hersch. These two lives-brave, compassionate, daring, inclusive, resilient-and and their art speak to the promise of this country. Their "collaboration" soars and inspires. The post Fireworks! ABOUT THE AUTHOR | Meet Marietta McCarty

Marietta McCarty is the author of bestseller Little Big Minds: Sharing Philosophy with Kids, Nautilus Award winner How Philosophy Can Save Your Life: 10 Ideas That Matter Most, and The Philosopher's Table: How to Start Your Philosophy Dinner Club-Monthly Conversation, Music, and Recipes.

Marietta enjoyed lively philosophy circles among her college students at Piedmont Virginia Community College for twenty-eight years before setting off on her career as an author. Her books lead her into new circles of fledgling philosophers of all ages-on playgrounds, in dining rooms, through back doors into kitchens, through front doors into libraries and restaurants, at business meetings and after-work parties.
