November 2015
NOVEMBER IS AMERICAN DIABETES MONTH®

diabetes check November is the month to raise awareness about diabetes in your workplace!  From 1980 through 2011, the number of working-age adults with diagnosed diabetes more than tripled, rising from 5.5 million to 19.6 million persons. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 1 out of 3 people in the U.S. will develop diabetes in their lifetime.  On the Mid-Shore of Maryland, 10% of the adult population has been diagnosed with diabetes, and another 35% have pre-diabetes, according to the 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System report.

The total cost of diabetes care and management comes to approximately $245 billion each year. Of that, over $60 billion each year is attributed to factors which directly hurt businesses: increased absenteeism ($5 billion), reduced productivity ($20.8 billion), inability to work caused by diabetes-related disability ($21.6 billion), and early mortality ($18.5 billion). People diagnosed with diabetes incur about $7,900 in diabetes care costs each year, and patients with diabetes typically have medical expenditures 2.3 times higher than their non-diabetic counterparts. The total cost is so high that over 1 in 5 health care dollars is spent on care for people with diagnosed diabetes.
