JULY 2015

It's summer! Be sure to get outdoors this month and take advantage of all that Maryland has to offer. From biking, hiking, swimming, to paddle boarding, there is something for everyone to do!
Summer's Must Have Apps
While summer is about getting outdoors, and disconnecting from technology, there are a few apps we can't resist.

AccessDNR is the official app from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for the State's outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you want to visit a State Park, hunt or fish, explore waterways by boat or kayak, or simply watch wildlife, the AccessDNR app provides all the information and services you need on the go.

SwimGuide The Waterkeeper Swim Guide helps you find the beaches with clean water. Over 5,000 beaches listed in the U.S. See which beaches get the thumbs up, and which ones to steer clear.

Recreation.gov An app to help campers and RV'ers browse and locate campgrounds at national parks, forests and other federal recreation facilities.  Recreation.gov iPhone app displays current availability information for federal campsites, cabins, day-use areas and other sites.

RunKeeper  Track your runs, walks, bike rides, training workouts and all of the other fitness activities using the GPS in your phone.

PlantNet Among other features, this free app helps identifying plant species from photographs, through a visual recognition software. Hit the trails!

Maryland's "Buy Local" Challenge
July 18-25
Why? In addition to providing food that's fresh and nutritional, buying from local farms promotes cleaner air and water and reduces our carbon footprint on the planet. In Maryland, if every household purchased just $12 worth of farm products for eight weeks (basically the summer season), over $200 million would be put back into the pockets of our farmers.

How? Encourage your members or staff to take the challenge and be counted! Make a special effort to feature local foods in your cafeteria. Post the BLC logo on your Web site and in your newsletters, signs and advertising. Display or distribute the BLC fliers and posters. You can use the tools in the Online Community to create and promote your own group and event.
Ready, Set, GO!

Participating in walks and runs can be a great way to build team morale and promote exercise at the same time. Now is the time to start organizing your team!

Have a Safe, Happy, and Healthy July!

Sincerely,

Nicole
