September is Fruits & Veggies- More Matters Month!

Eating fruits and vegetables provides many health benefits. People who eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can help lower their risk for heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and some types of cancer.  Eating healthy can also help prevent obesity and high blood pressure.

However, many people don't eat enough fruits and vegetables.
  • Only 1 in 3 adults eat the recommended amount of fruits every day;
  • Only 1 in 4 adults eat the recommended amount of vegetables every day.
Most people know that eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health, but most of us still aren't getting enough. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits can help you:
  • Lower your risk for heart disease and some types of cancer
  • Maintain or reach a healthy weight
  • Keep your body strong and active
Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your day:
  • Keep a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it.
  • Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so they're ready for quick, healthy snacks.
  • Challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every week.
Click here to view the Top 10 Healthy Ways to Cook Fruits and Vegetables. Remember, eating more fruits and veggies can be fun - and it's worth it!

Wellness Warriors - NATIVE HEALTH's new Children's Obesity Prevention Program

The NATIVE HEALTH Wellness Warriors Program is currently looking for Native American children (ages 7-12) and their families, who are interested in learning and promoting healthy living.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, which means it's time to raise awareness about the obesity epidemic within the Native community and promote healthy alternatives towards a solution.
We recognize that the first few weeks of school may be hectic and  sometimes breakfast may not be a priority. To get the school year started off right here are a few healthy tips that should help you eat right, eat healthy, and do well in school:

Keep it simple! Time is not something we all have when getting ready for school. Your food should be diverse but easy to make.
Keep water handy! Water is your best friend. Always stay hydrated.
Take snacks! A good way of keeping hunger away is with a good healthy snack. Cheese strings, wheat crackers, or a yogurt are always good options.
If you or someone you know, would like additional information  please contact Dr. Katie Carpenter at (602) 279-5262, x 3454  or email her.

This program is supported by funding from the Office of the Attorney General.
Flu Shot Clinics

Flu vaccine will be arriving this month! It's not too soon to think about the flu vaccine.   You may make an appointment or walk in for a shot in September (call for vaccine availability).  Flu shots are provided at no charge for Native Americans with Tribal ID.  All others are $20.00.

NATIVE HEALTH is able to provide flu shot clinics off-site.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends that all individuals over the age of six months receive a flu shot as soon as they are able.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It spreads  from person to person and may lead to death.  NATIVE HEALTH medical providers recommend getting a shot as soon as possible.  The best way to prevent the flu is getting a flu vaccination each year.   For more information please call (602) 279-5262 or email Amanda.

Your Medical Health from a Different Point of View - Integrated Behavioral Health
This month's topic:  Should we be worried about your child's weight?  by Bridgette Terrazas, M.S.W., LCSW, NATIVE HEALTH Behavioral Health Consultant.

Our children come in all shapes and sizes. As a parent, grandparent, auntie, etc., we love them no matter what that shape may be. So when our child's doctor tells us our child is overweight, we instinctively feel protective. Some of us dismiss the doctor's concerns believing our child will outgrow their chubbiness, or we think our child is big boned and that is just the way they are. We should listen closely because what our child's doctor is really telling us is this..."I care about your child's health now and how healthy your child is going to be in the future as in five, ten and even thirty years from now."

This month let's focus on Childhood Obesity and take a look at our child's medical health from a different view. We know our child's doctor wants our child to be active daily, make healthy food choices, and use correct portion sizes to prevent, delay, and eliminate future health problems such as severe obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Now, moving from a medical to a behavioral health perspective, let's look at what else we can discover to battle childhood obesity because it's not just related to food and activity level.

Lack of sleep and stress play a big role in how our children manage their weight. Sleep is very important to our children's growing bodies and lack of it, can interfere with how their mind and bodies stay healthy. And being exposed to a stressful and scary environment such as domestic violence, abuse, neglect, can interfere with how their body reacts to food and our child's motivation and ability to make better choices. Here at NATIVE HEALTH, there are staff and programs to help you and your child and your family be healthy and stay healthy. If you would like to further discuss this topic, make an appointment with your doctor. While speaking with you doctor, ask to see the Behavioral Health Consultant. Anytime you feel there is a mental health crisis, you can call the Crisis Line 24/7 at  (602) 222-9444.
