ISSUE NUMBER 14                                                                         MARCH 2014

VOTE YES on MARCH 25th in Support of Sarasota County Schools!

A special referendum will be appearing on the ballot on Tuesday, March 25th to extend the 1-mill tax to fund Sarasota County Schools. Passing this vote is critical to keep Sarasota County as one of only FIVE school districts statewide that is rated with a grade of "A." Funds from the referendum help pay for important programs such as science, technology, engineering and arts.
INVEST IN OUR FUTURE! Take the time to VOTE YES on MARCH 25th!

CANstruction Event Helps Fight Hunger in our Community

Bennett Contracting was proud to participate as a sponsor with the SweetSparkman Architects team at the 2014 CANstruction Event put on by the Gulf Coast AIA and All Faiths Food Bank. The team created a "Tuna Castle-role" -- a huge sculpture of 5,558 cans of Bumblebee Tuna. The design was inspired by the Crystal Class Sand Sculpting Competition held each year on Siesta Key. The "can-castle" won both the Structural Integrity award and the coveted "People's Choice Award." Visit Southgate Mall before March 10th to see the CAN-struction Event!

JOB UPDATE: Where We're Diggin' Now

Bennett Contracting was delighted to be selected as the site contractor for two of the area's most high-profile projects. Above is a photo of front page news articles from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune featuring the Siesta Key Beach Park Improvement Project being built by Jon F. Swift, Inc. and the Patriot Plaza at Sarasota National Cemetery being built by Willis A. Smith Construction. In addition to these two projects we were also selected as the site contractor for the Sarasota High School replacement school project with Tandem Construction. A photo of the new bus loop at Sarasota High, which we completed prior to the start of the school year last August is shown below. We recently completed a lift station install for Berry Plastics, working with the engineering team at George F. Young.

Bennett Recipe: Southern Shrimp n' Grits

We know that most of you read this newsletter for the recipes so here you go!

Yield: 4 servings
Level: Easy

6 slices bacon
4 cups chicken stock
Salt and pepper (to taste)
1 cup stone-ground yellow grits
2 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 cup thinly sliced scallions
1 clove garlic, minced

Fry bacon in large skillet until browned; drain on paper towel and crumble into small pieces. Keep bacon grease in pan for cooking shrimp.

Bring chicken stock to a boil. Add salt and pepper. Add grits, lower the heat and stir occasionally until the stock is completely absorbed. Remove from heat and stir in butter and cheese. (Follow package direction on grits package for cooking time - mine takes about 6 minutes.

Rinse shrimp and pat dry. Heat the pan with bacon grease back up and add shrimp. Cook until shrimp turn pink. Add lemon juice, bacon, scallions and garlic. Saute for 3 minutes.

Spoon grits into a bowl or plate. Add shrimp mixture to top. Eat it up!
