Announcements
OU Nightly newscast heads to the National College Television AwardsAwardOUN
The National College Television Awards (also known as the student EMMYs) called OU Nightly's Senior Producer Lauren King on March 4 to inform her that the Nightly's Nov. 25 newscast had moved from the second round to the finals.  Lauren will attend the award ceremony in Los Angeles.

During the three-day affair, "winners are invited to participate in a Nominee Summit at the Television Academy, where they are exposed to industry professionals and undergo development workshops. Students also become part of the Television Academy Foundation alumni network, which provides access to year-round networking opportunities and events."

Congratulations to Lauren, her Co-Senior Producer Madeline Stebbins, newscast director Olivia McKennon and all the OU Nightly team members.

Macias brothers to receive College Television Award for 'Routes TV-Hell in the Heartland'Macias
Erik and Karl Macias just received a call from the College Emmy Awards, and they have received a College Television Award for "Routes TV-Hell in the Heartland."

The brothers will fly out to L.A. for a two-day industry meet and greet ending with the awards ceremony on April 23, where they will learn what place their production earned.

The College Television Awards is extremely competitive national competition; the TV program undergoes a three-round judging process from members of the Television Academy before it gets to this point.

Please join us in congratulating the Macias brothers.

Arun Gandhi to speak this week on non-violence in a violent worldarun
Arun Gandhi, author and peace activist, will be speaking at 7 p.m. this Thursday, March 12 in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium on the first floor of Gaylord Hall.

Born in 1934 in Durban, South Africa, Arun is the fifth grandson of India's legendary leader, Mohandas K. "Mahatma" Gandhi. Growing up under the discriminatory apartheid laws of South Africa, he was beaten by "white" South Africans for being too black and "black" South Africans for being too white; so, Arun sought eye-for-an-eye justice. However, he learned from his parents and grandparents that justice does not mean revenge, it means transforming the opponent through love and suffering.

Grandfather taught Arun to understand nonviolence through understanding violence. "If we know how much passive violence we perpetrate against one another we will understand why there is so much physical violence plaguing societies and the world," Gandhi said. Through daily lessons, Arun says, he learned about violence and about anger.

RescheduledMaking a Living as a Writer, 5000-level pro practice course, rescheduled

JMC 5001     Sec. 901      CRN 34731

Profs. Win Blevins and Meredith Blevins, authors of more the 40 books.

Online session 1:
Fri. 4/24/15       5-9 p.m.

Online session 2:
Sat. 4/25/15       9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Online session 3:
Sun. 4/26/15      1-5 p.m.

MAKING A LIVING AS A WRITER is how to get going as a professional writing books and movies.  The class is likely to touch on magazines and the web, briefly.

This class focuses on issues like what the financial prospects are in each area, what the customary business practices are, whether to start publishing books traditionally or digitally, how to get entry into the biz, what agents, editors, and producers actually do, what's in contracts and what to watch out for in them, how book production works (movie production is too complicated to get into), how to do social marketing, and more.

Not a course on how to write but a course on how to become an established pro.

There will be reading to do in advance and a booklet to write after class.
Enrollment still open for 5000-level e-publishing pro practice course

E-Publications Training & Overview for the Writer/Entrepreneur

The class covers the burgeoning e-book market that has literally exploded onto the scene over the last handful of years. Students will discuss the potential of the e-book market, the possibility of working with/for an e-publisher as a writer/editor or even going into business as an e-publisher. Several prospective employers are also interested in hiring people with these web-based skills.

Students will learn in class with hands-on experience how to format and upload manuscripts into e-book platforms, how to design covers in Photoshop, and how to back up their projects with a web presence.

NOTE: You must have 5,000 words ready to upload BEFORE the first day of class. If you do not have the 5,000 words, you will not be permitted to take the class and you will have to pay any add/drop/late/withdrawal fees assessed by the registrar/bursar.
