Weekend course announcement: AFAM 4713-900, Afrocentric Thinking and Civil Rights |
ONE OF OKC's TOP LAWYERS Melvin Hall, J.D. TEACHES AFAM 4713-900 Afrocentric Thinking and Civil Rights *****Three Weekend Course***** Dates: Feb. 27,28, Mar 1; Mar.6,7,8; 27,28,29 Meeting times Fri. 6:pm-10:pm; Sat. 9:am-5:pm; & Sun. 1:pm-5:pm This course compares the methods of demonstration, boycotts, voting litigation, legislation, and politics used during the Civil Rights Movement with the methods being utilized today. It is particularly relevant in light of the 2014 fatal shootings of Tamir Rice and Michael Brown and fatal choking of Eric Garner and Luis Rodriquez. These events resulted in a social media outbreak: #icantbreathe, #blacklivesmatter, and public demonstrations held throughout the country and on this campus. This course also explores restrictions to voting, marriage equality, and mass incarceration. Meteoric change resulted from the leadership and strategies utilized during the Civil Rights Movement. We will explore whether those same strategies coupled with the technology of today garner positive change. If you need assistance enrolling, please call the AFAM office at 325-2327 or e-mail rsgomez@ou.edu.

Legendary correspondent, anchor, author Tom Brokaw to receive Gaylord Prize |
One of the most well recognized and respected faces in broadcast, Tom Brokaw, will be on campus to receive the Gaylord Prize this Thursday, February 26.
Brokaw will attend a luncheon being held in his honor at noon in the Molly Shi Boren Ballroom in the Oklahoma Memorial Union. He will then be available for student questions at Q&A to be held from 2:30-3:15 p.m. in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium on the first floor of Gaylord Hall.
As NBC's Washington Correspondent from 1973-76, Brokaw covered the Watergate Scandal. He went on to host "Today Show" for the next six years, leaving in 1982 to become co-anchor of "NBC Nightly News" alongside Roger Mudd. Brokaw took over as sole anchor of the program in 1983. During his time as anchor, Brokaw covered the Oklahoma City bombing, the Challenger disaster and Hurricane Andrew. Brokaw was also the only anchor to report live from the fall of the Berlin Wall.
He interviewed Mikhail Gorbachev, in the only one-on-one interview the leader held with an American journalist, and conducted the first one-on-one American television interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has interviewed every president since Lyndon B. Johnson and has covered every presidential election since 1968.
Brokaw postponed his retirement in order to cover the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States. After 21 years with the program, Brokaw stepped down from his position as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, passing the position to Brian Williams. By the time he left the show, Brokaw had become the most trusted face in American news and had raised NBC Nightly News to the number one spot, according to Neilson ratings. His final show as anchor was broadcast to a total 15.7 million viewers on December 21, 2004. After leaving the anchor's chair, Brokaw continued to contribute to NBC as an analyst during the 2008 presidential election campaign and a special correspondent. He also contributed to documentaries for both The History Channel and The Discovery Channel. Brokaw returned to broadcast journalism in June 2008 to announce the death of his friend and colleague, NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert. He then served as interim moderator for Russert's "Meet the Press" until a replacement could be hired. Behind the scenes, Brokaw has written for numerous publications, as well as creating reports for 60 Minutes. In 1998, Brokaw became a best selling author with the publication of his book, "The Greatest Generation." Since then, he has published another six books, half of which became best sellers. February 2014, a 74-year-old Brokaw announced that he'd been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that is characterized by malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow.Honors:

Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement Records of Achievement Award from The Foundation for the National Archives The George Catlett Marshall Medal, first ever to a journalist West Point Sylvanus Thayer Award, in recognition of devoted service to bringing exclusive interviews and stories to public attention Inducted as a fellow into the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
