Notes from the Director of Graduate Studies
|
Over the last few weeks, I had an opportunity to meet with you and discuss many different issues. I am glad to report that I am working hard on solving small and big issues that you brought to my attention so far... Let me know how I am doing by dropping by and sharing your smile J
GRAD STUDENT LIFE NEWS:
Here is an update from the "fix-it" front: You asked for a coffee maker.... You got it! The new coffee maker we ordered for you has been delivered today. I put it (still in the box) in the GA kitchen area. Feel free to open it, clean it (as with all new things, you want to wash it with soap and water and then give it a couple of "dry runs"), use it and take care of it. Make sure that you turn the coffee maker off before you leave: although the model we bought for you has an automatic shut-off button, I'd say it is still a good idea to turn it off.
As we agreed, you are responsible for getting coffee, coffee filters, cleaning it and keeping the area around the coffee maker clean. I will donate a start-up kit, ground coffee and paper filters (to get you started), but then it will be up to you to provide supplies.
We are in the process of getting the cork board for your kitchen area so that you can post announcements for one another and we can post news and announcements for you. We are also in the process of ordering a book shelf for the GA area for your internal library. You will have a white board and a world map on the wall of your kitchen area soon, too. The lights in the Grad. Pad area will be fixed this week. We are working on getting the desk lamps for the Master GA cubicles.
I am excited to announce that now we have two graduate senators from the Gaylord College: Amanda Kehrberg (representing PhD students) and Anna Kochigina (representing MA/MPW students). Please feel free to bring any concerns or questions you might have to your senators first so that they can communicate the concerns to me.
Big thanks to Steven Thorn who is organizing the first every Gaylord College talent show! I look forward to see the talent (and hope I will get chance to perform, too!). This will be a social event for all graduate students, faculty, staff and our families. The plan is to invite everyone! The Talent Show will be March 11 at 7:30p.m.-9:30p.m. in GYLD 3150. See Steven for more information.
Last year, the Gaylord College Research/Creative Activity Development Committee started hosting the BYOR (Bring Your Own Research) seminars in which faculty and graduate students can present their research and creative activity and get feedback.
We've planned our next BYOR seminar for Wednesday, March 4, starting at 2 p.m. in the grad. conference room. This time around, grad. students will share their research presentations they prepared for the AEJMC mid-winter conference. All grad students and faculty are welcome to attend the seminar. This will be a great way for all of us to learn more about conference-style presentations.
Please mark your calendars!

|
Originally scheduled for February 20-22, the "Making a Living as a Writer" pro-practice class has been moved to late April. Enrollment is limited, so sign up today for this excellent, extraordinary opportunity to study with Win Blevins and Meredith Blevins, authors of over 40 books.

Profs. Win Blevins and Meredith Blevins
Online session 1:
Fri. 4/24/15 5-9 p.m.
Online session 2:
Sat. 4/25/15 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Online session 3:
Sun. 4/26/15 1-5 p.m.
MAKING A LIVING AS A WRITER is how to get going as a professional in writing books and movies. We're likely to touch on magazines and the web, briefly.
This class focuses on issues like what the financial prospects are in each area, what the customary business practices are, whether to start publishing books traditionally or digitally, how to get entry into the biz, what agents, editors, and producers actually do, what's in contracts and what to watch out for in them, how book production works (movie production is too complicated to get into), how to do social marketing, and more. Not a course on how to write but a course on how to become an established pro. There will be reading to do in advance and a booklet to write after class.

Sponsored by the Center on Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California
Nation Branding and Public Diplomacy: The Model of Country Concept
AEJMC 2015 - Annual Conference * San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotel - August 5, 2015
Researchers and professionals from a variety of disciplines have pursued the concepts of nation branding and public diplomacy, not surprisingly using existing discipline-specific theories, models and terminology to frame their work. A core group of communication scholars, for instance, has developed around the study of public diplomacy as public relations. Scholars from marketing continue to explore ways in which a country's image can be managed like a brand. While many have written about the overlaps and intersections of nation branding and public diplomacy, few have attempted to view the two fields, and the many related areas, holistically. 500 word abstracts to be submitted by April 15, 2015/ Full papers due July 15, 2015. |

Page and Johnson Legacy Scholar competition for the study of integrity in public communication
The Arthur W. Page Center at the Penn State College of Communications has announced its annual Page and Johnson Legacy Scholar competition for the study of integrity in public communication.
This year, the Center is issuing two calls, one for sustainability communication research and one for research on a broad range of ethical topics. The Center will award grants to support scholars and professionals making important contributions to knowledge, practice, or public understanding of ethics and responsibility in public communication.
The intent of the program is to foster a modern understanding and application of the Page Principles and the Johnson & Johnson Credo by supporting innovative research, educational, or public service projects in a wide variety of academic disciplines and professional fields.
In addition to the special call for the national panel on sustainability communication, the Center is issuing a call for grant proposals on general topics of ethical communication. Of specific interest are proposals that align with prior initiatives of the Center and grant proposals that build on prior research supported by the Center.

Thematic issue on the challenges of public affairs in modern organizations
Hermes - Journal of Language and Communication in Business
Submission deadline 16 March 2015
Submission Instructions
A growing number of organizations across the private, public and third sectors are becoming involved in different public affairs efforts and seek to collaborate with political decision-makers and influence political processes both at national and international levels. They have a clear realization of the need to contribute to law-making and to seek to affect the implementation and administration of political initiatives which may impact their prosperity and freedom to practice a profession, business or trade.
The current thematic section invites new and innovative contributions in the field of public affairs investigating the communicative challenges facing any type of modern organization which aims to represent special interests and causes in the marketplace for political ideas and public policy. We are interested in both empirical and conceptual/theoretical papers seeking to develop new understandings of how different organizations use communication to interface and develop relationships with social and political actors involved in the development of public policy, legislation and regulation. Topics might include (but are not limited to): * Theoretical and empirical studies on the interplay between politics, business and interest groups * The landscape of interest representation and the organized groups trying to affect policy formulation * Case studies on specific public affairs campaigns * How discourses on social, political and cultural issues affect organizations * The role of news media and journalists in constructing public affairs identity * Public discourses about and public perceptions of public affairs * The status of lobbying regulations * Transparency and public affairs * Crisis management and public affairs * Social media and public affairs * The "big data" phenomenon and public affairs * Public affairs measurement For full submission requirements, style sheet and example of article, click http://bcom.au.dk/research/publications/journals/hermes/. You may also access the Hermes Flyer, http://www.e-pages.dk/aarhusuniversitet/984/. If you have any questions regarding publication in this thematic issue on public affairs, please contact guest editors Chiara Valentini ( c.valentini@bcom.au.dk) or Poul Erik Flyvholm Jorgensen ( pj@bcom.au.dk).

Wednesday September 16th-Friday September 18th 2015
Call for Papers
September 16th-18th 2015, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford will host the first annual International Journal of Press/Politics conference, focused on academic research on the relation between media and political processes around the world. A selection of the best papers presented at the conference will be published in the journal after peer review. The deadline for submission of abstracts is March 27, 2015. Attendees will be notified of acceptance by April 27. Professor Frank Esser from the University of Zurich will deliver a keynote lecture "When news logic meets politics. A cross-national and cross-temporal investigation of key changes in public affairs coverage." The conference brings together scholars doing internationally-oriented or comparative research on the intersection between news media and politics around the world. It aims to provide a forum for academics from a wide range of different disciplines and countries to discuss the theoretical, methodological, and substantial challenges and opportunities for research in this area. It is open to work from political science, political communication, journalism studies, media and communications research and many other fields, and is especially interested in providing advanced doctoral students and junior researchers an opportunity to meet fellow scholars in a good environment. Examples of relevant topics include the political implications of current changes in the media, the relative importance of new forms of digital media for engaging with news and politics, studies of the role of entertainment and popular culture in how people follow current affairs, studies of relations between political actors and journalists, research on political communication beyond the electoral context (including of government, interest groups, and social movements), all with a particular interest in studies that focus on under-researched parts of the world, develop comparative approaches, or represent substantial theoretical or methodological advances. Titles and abstracts for papers (250 words max) are invited by Friday March 27th 2015. Please send submissions to the email address ijpp@politics.ox.ac.uk with the subject line "IJPP conference submission" and with the full title, abstract, and your name and professional affiliation attached in a word document.
